COMPARISON TRAIL RUNNING SHOES 2022
BROOKS CALDERA 6, HOKA SPEEDGOAT 5 AND ALTRA MONT BLANC

BROOKS CALDERA 6

Born to go far and keep you comfortable on the trails. The Brooks Caldera 6 now has all-new premium cushioning, nitrogen-infused DNA LOFT v3, and a reconfigured outsole. The updates provide maximum comfort and a stable ride so runners forget their shoes and focus on the kilometres ahead.
  • NITROGEN-INFUSED DNA Loft V3: cushioning foam which it’s softer, lighter and more responsive than previous foam compounds used by Brooks. The softest midsole cushioning until now, made up of a combination of EVA foam, rubber, and air — yep, even air gets credit as a cushioning ingredient. The fine-tuned combo ensures that the feet get a super soft ride every time you lace up.
  • TRAIL TRACK OUTSOLE: Full length TrailTack Outsole Rubber Compound. TrailTack rubber make it easier to grip the ground when traveling uphill or downhill. If the weather turns south, it can also keep you from slipping on wet surfaces.

HOKA SPEEDGOAT 5

The Speedgoat 5 trail running shoes by Hoka are equipped with the abrasion-resistant Vibram Megagrip rubber compound and have a powerful grip even in demanding terrain thanks to the long lugs. Double jacquard mesh fabric is used as the upper.

The light material comes from recycled fibers and wicks moisture away from you when you run. The reinforced toe cap provides additional protection in technical terrain.

  • VIBRAM MEGAGRIP OUTSOLE: designed for daily training, but that can perform very well in races, especially in ultras and even better if they are technical.
  • MIDSOLE: CMEVA compound, qual to the EVA foam mounted by the current Speedgoat 4. Why change a winning team, when you have already reduced weight.

ALTRA MONT BLANC

Thats the case with this Altra Mont Blanc, a long distance shoes, designed having in mind the, probably, most famous ultra trail in the world: the UTMB or Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc. As the own brand promotes them: Say Bonjour to the all-new Mont Blanc.

According to the American brand, this Altra Mont Blanc are the ultimate long distance trail shoe inspired by the highest mountain in the Alps. This trail cruiser is designed with our Altra EGO™ MAX midsole foam and our Standard FootShape™ Fit to provide ultimate comfort and our Vibram® LiteBase outsole for traction on any terrain.

They have strategically added material where it’s needed and removed material where it’s not, resulting in a lightweight, breathable design ready for all-day trail excursions.

  • FOOTSHAPE TOE BOX: allows the toes to relax and spread out naturally for more confort and stability in uphill climbs and downhill descents.
  • BALANCE CUSHIONING PLATFROM: places the heel and forefoot the same distance from the ground to encourage proper, low-impact form throughout your trail run.
  • VIBRAM MEGAGRIP:  a high perfromance sticky rubber compound featuring unparalleled grip on wet and dry surfaces, rugged longevity and optimal ground adaptability.
  • EGOMAX: the Altra EGO™ Max midsole foam gives you all the light and luxurious performance with a little extra bounce and added durability.

DATA SHEET COMPARISON

The three shoes move with similar numbers, with prices between 190€ for the Altra, being the most expensive and the 150€ of both the Brooks(peding confirmation) and Hoka.

About the weight, both Hoka and Altra are below the “magic” 300 grams, while the Brooks goes a little bit “overweighted” with its 310 grams.

In the 3 of them, being the drop area, where they are really different as we have 3 completely different concepts: from the classic zero drop of Altra, to the standard in competition shoes and Hoka, 4 mm, and the 6 mm of the Brooks, more closed to the “beginners shoes”.

COMPARISON TRAIL RUNNING SHOES 2022: CONCLUSIONS

The numbers of the shoes give a clear message: confort to run miles and miles on the trails, thanks mainly to the new premium cushioning developed by the brands.

What it is clear is the fact that maximalism seems to be more and more popular among all the big brands in the game: SalomonHOKA INOV8 or Saucony

The new Speedgoat 5 is a training/competition shoe which offers the perfect combination between weight 291 g., comfort and durability all of them provided by the midsole and Vibram Megagrip sole.

Now a days its clear that all trail running shoe brands are going to have at least one or two shoes in their catalogue with at least 30 mm of stack high, as we presented you some months ago here.

The key however comes with the combination of a thick “mattress” and middle/low weight, which in the case of the the three of them, we would say, very well balanced weights between 310 grams from the Caldera 6 and with only 280 grams, but the main difference of the Mont Blanc related to the other 2 or with any other well cushioned shoe in the market is always the Zero Drop from the americans, plus the toe box that allows the toes to relax and spread out naturally for more confort and stability

Having a very cushioned shoe its now a days synonym of confort and in majority of the cases long durability, which in the case of this Altra, having the Vibram MegaGrip compound works as a guarantee of durability.

In conclusion, we see the Speedgoat 5 and the Altra Mont Blanc more closed to a competition shoe, mainly due to their weights in comparisson with the Brooks which is still above the 300 grams mark. It will be very interesting to see how do they really perform as a long distance shoe in technical terrain as the soles are also different, with 2 of them using Vibram Megagrip and Brooks using their own compound.

All in all the three of them are going to perform ver well, according to their numbers, in long runs.
