SALOMON TRAIL RUNNING 2023:
NEW GLIDE MAX TRAIL, PULSAR TRAIL PRO 2, SENSE RIDE 5 AND MORE

As the leader in trail running for the past two decades, Salomon has supported many of the top athletes in the sport. From ultra-running to “shorter” marathon distance races like those found on the Golden Trail Series, the Salomon team has long been the gold standard at the professional level.

When it comes to footwear, the primary concern of everyday runners is not the weight, the presence of a blade or the drop. Based on market research, 80% of runners desire comfort from their trail running shoes more than any other performance characteristic.

SALOMON TRAIL RUNNING 2023: OFFICIAL NEWS

Based on these studies, for the Spring/Summer 2023 season, Salomon presents its most comfortable trail running shoes to date, in addition to updating some of the iconic models that have built the brand’s reputation in this sport.

In 2012, Salomon’s materials team was developing the first foam used in Salomon footwear, called OptiVibe. After years of work on materials and biomechanics, this team created the Energy Surge foam, which is now used in most of the French brand’s road and trail running shoes.

In this way and inspired by the recent success of the Glide Max asphalt shoe and the Ultra Glide trail running shoe, Salomon presents for Spring/Summer 2023 the new and cushioned Glide Max Trail. Likewise, the aforementioned Ultra Glide is also getting an update making it more breathable.

And two trail running icons, the XA Pro 3D v9 and the Sense Ride 5, also come with new features, such as a new outsole with more grip. Another novelty for this 2023, are the X-Adventure, inspired by the XA Pro 3D v9, which come with a generous fit and a soft interior.

And within these day-to-day shoes, one that is more of a competition missile, the Pulsar Trail Pro 2, which comes with an updated, more breathable upper.

SALOMON GLIDE MAX TRAIL: HIGHLIGHTS

TYPE OF RUNNER

This shoe could perfectly represent the entry point into the Salomon trail running world, with the only exception of using normal laces and not the typical Quicklace system from the French brand. Apart from being a shoe that can be used mainly for the beginners, new comers who do not enter into very technical terrain, it could perfectly be a great shoe for elite runners who also want comfort in their daily training or a perfect companion for ultras not very technical.

Other than that, to point out just one detail, the stack height that before seemed exclusive from HOKA, are more and more being adapted by Salomon, as has been proven that in one hand it is what the big audience is demanding, and in the other hand, it helps us to feel more comfortable for a longer amount of time, thanks to the big “mattress”.

UPPER

The upper part of the shoe includes the Sensifit technology that is already incorporated in other models of the brand and that will give us good breathability while a good fit of the foot inside the shoe, so necessary for our daily training.

While the front of the cover is lighter and more breathable, the back, especially the heel area, is more reinforced, providing that necessary security and support.

The Salomon Glide Max has a traditional lace system. Thanks also to the design of the mesh and the distribution of the eyelets, they will provide us with a perfect fit.

MIDSOLE

The compound of the midsole, Energy Surge, gives us a great cushioning, which together with the high stack height, make them really comfortable for our daily workouts and also for long distances, in addition with it lightness but without losing that reactivity so necessary when we need it.

It is shoe with very high profiles (38mm – 32mm), being the most maximalist shoe of the French brand in its 2023, a shoe with these profiles that was missing from its catalog and that approaches in this way a runner profile that prioritizes more comfort and cushioning over fast rhythms.

Inspired by Salomon’s ski heritage, the R. Camber technology, this curved midsole geometry helps us feel like we are floating over the ground. The rocker-shaped R.Camber geometry provides quick transitions and even more comfort. The fit of the Glide Max Trail is slightly wider than the Ultra-Glide to accommodate any type of foot.

SOLE

On the outsole, the trustworthy All-Terrain Contagrip ensures grip on all surfaces with the 3.5 studs distributed in different key areas of the landing face and also to help us having grip when going uphill.

SALOMON GLIDE MAX TRAIL: CONLCUSIONS

Salomon is a little closer to the popular trail runner with this new shoe intended for daily training, with great cushioning and high profiles that were still missing in its trail running catalog, except for the Ultra Glide 2, in which lighter shoes and for faster runners stood out above all.

The Salomon Glide Max Trail has all the numbers to become one of the most used trail running shoes by the popular runners for their daily workouts and that prioritize cushioning and comfort over fast rhythms.

The sole, with the All-Terrain Contagrip compound, is a durability insurance, so necessary in this type of shoes intended to run long distances without excessive wear of the sole.

Alternatives?  Among those of other brands, we could point out:

SACUCONY XODUS TRAIL: Similar concept for long and agile running, with a bit more weight and deeper lugs.

ASICS TRABUCO MAX: The maximalist version of the Japanese Trabuco saga for long and fast on the mattress.
