ZEGAMA AIZKORRI: START AT ZEGAMA 09.00 CET
At 09.00 CET, in Zegama, Spain, the start will take place for this Zegama-Aizkorri Mendi Maratoia with 510 athletes, of 23 nationalities, on the starting line, a clear sky and about 12°C temperature in the village, 20km/h winds and 8-9°C on the top on th early morning, raising to 20°C by midday.
This is how our collagues lived the start this morning.
With only 500 meters, two athletes from Kenya are already leading the pack, however as soon as the climb to Ultzama started, Kilian took the lead.

In the first climbing meters, Kilian Jornet leads together with the Japanese Ruy Ueda followed by Davide Magnini and Remi Bonet and in the women Nienke Brinkman is leading also followed by Maude Mathys and Teresiah Omosa,
Remenber that Nienke Brinkman, from the Nike Running team, is a marathoner athlete with 2 h 22 min just a couple of weeks ago in the Rotterdam Marathon.
KM 8,5| ULTZAMA
On the pass of KM 8.5 the top 5 continues with Kilian’s leading, followed by the Kenyan Robert PKemboi and Davide Magnini.
In the men’s TOP 10 names like Oriol Cardona, Francesco Puppi, Aritz Egea are just 20-30 seconds behind the top 5.
Nienke continues leading the women’s pack, passing the 8.5 km in just 46 mins, followed by Maude Mathys and the Spanish Sara Alonso.
KM 13,5 | ATABARRETA
The same group keeps on leading at the pass by KM 13,5 in Atabarreta
Nienke Brinkman continues leading for the final victory with 1:14.40. followed still by Maude Mathys 1:17.11 and Sara Alonso 1:18.59.
KM 16,1| ARATZ
At the beginig of the climb to Aratz Kilian has already left all the pack behind except for Davide Magnini whop still follows him on very short distance.
On third position arrived Remi Bonet and Elhousine Elazzaoui in fourth and Reuben Narry fith.
Nienke arrives also to the top of Aratz in 1:42.31, Maude Mathys in 1:45:41 and Sara Alonso in 1:48, so the TOP3 women are fighting evey single meter.
KM 19,6 | SANCTI SPIRITU
The first 3 athletes, Kilian, Davide and Elhousine start the climb
And this is how Kilian is climbing irectly to Aizkorri, where when arriving he would have achieve already 2000 M+
On the women race Nienke is still leading with a very strong pace. Still the same maude and Sara run behind in a loop of 3 minutes.
KM 22 | AIZKORRI
Kilian and Davide arrived firts still followed 30 seconds behind by Elhousine. After the TOP3 Remi Bonet is follow by the first Kenyan athlete Robert, reuben and Ben Kimtai.
Very interesting to see Nadir Maguet on the TOP 10 who lost his flight to Zegama twice and had to drive the whole night to wrrive to the Basque Country. It seems not sleeping has not been a problem for him.
Nienke continues with her strong pace arriving, little by little, meter by meter, to the summit of Aizkorri and arrives there 11 minutes below the standing race record with 2:26:00 still followed by Maude in 2:30.45, second, and Sara, third and Fabiola Conti not too far from Sara.
KM 28,5 |URBIA
Kilian has made his move and arrives completely alone to the beginning of the uphill to Andraitz, with about 1 min to Davide Magnini and 2,5 min to Elhousine.
ATTENTION!! Kilian is at this moment 5 minutes below the record from Stian Angermund (3h45′) in 2017.
KM 30 | ANDRAITZ
Kilian has climbed again alone and has started a crazy descent and has 1min 20 seconds from Davide Magnini.
KM 34,2| MOANO
Already at km 34 with only 8 km to the finish line in Zegama, Kilian is looking his watch with Davide following him on less that 1.30 min
KM 41| MURGIZELAI
Kilian keeps on looking his watch in the race that will (most likely) be his 10th Victory here in Zegama, and what a victory trying to smash the 2017 record from Stian Angermund.
KM 42 ZEGAMA | FINISH
Kilian Jornet, Nnormal Team, wins his 10th Txapela at Zegama-Aizkorri beating the previous record from 2017 Stian Angermund, with an incredible time of 3 hors 36 min and 41 seconds, 9 minutes below the previous record.
Davide Magnini follows Kilian in the fnish line also 6 minutes below the previous record. Third on the podium has been Manuel Merillas 3h 45 min with a very impressive performance in the last kilometers.
Nienke Brinkman wins Zegama 2022 with almost 20 min under the previous record with 4h 16m 45 followed by Maude Mathys who also arrived under the previous record and third at Zegama has been Sara Alonso
