ZEGAMA AIZKORRI VERTICAL KILOMETER 2022: VICTORIES FOR EMILIE FORSBERG AND ORIOL CARDONA.Our MOUNTAIN RACING CALENDAR 2022 bring us the results of the beginning of the Zegama weeked which just started a couple of hours ago with the Vertical Kilometer and victories for Emilie Forgsberg and Oriol Cardona.
The Catalan, who has beaten the record of the test, and the Swedish have won the Vertical Kilometer that opens the weekend of the Zegama Aizkorri 2022 with a time of 32’59 and 42’26, respectively.
Both Cardona and Forsberg will take the start on Sunday at the 21st Zegama-Aizkorri.

ZEGAMA AIZKORRI 2022: VERTICAL KILOMETER

Zegama has begun to vibrate this afternoon with the celebration of the eighth edition of the Zegama-Aizkorri Vertical Kilometer, timed race with start at the intersection that there is, just one kilometer before the finish of Zegama and end at the top of the Iraule.
Oriol Cardona and Emelie Forsberg have won, respectively, in the male and female category with a time of 32’59 and 42’26 respectively. Cardona has beaten today the record of the test that was in the possession of Stian Angermund since 2017, when he signed a time of 34’55.
A total of 197 participants have covered the 3,000 meters of the race, with a positive elevation of 1,015 meters and on a wooded terrain with a very demanding final climb and a thick fog that has accompanied throughout the race.

Oriol Cardona: “Today’s race went very well, in terms of weather conditions it was perfect because there was a bit of humidity but it was not hot either. On a physical level I knew I was coming here in good shape, I’ve been training very well these last two weeks. After the winter season I knew that in terms of rise this year I am stronger than other years. I’ve done my career, at my own pace, trying to control not to overdo it and be consistent. I knew the record was 34 and to be able to lower the time by more than a minute has been incredible. I did not expect to be so strong and this motivates me a lot to try to do a good marathon. This summer promises. As for the marathon I come from a small injury and although I am in good shape I have run little, I have a few kilometers in my legs and maybe the descents of the marathon will be complicated. I will go out and try to hold on as long as I can but if I notice the tibial a lot, which is where it hurts, I will surely abandon because I do not want to mortgage the whole season for a race.”
Emelie Forsberg: “I am very happy with my time, I have seen that it is better than the last time I ran this test which has surprised me. I really enjoyed the race and I’m super happy. As for Sunday, the marathon will be another story entirely. I haven’t done long-distance workouts in a while and I’m a little nervous. I think it will be a bit long for me so I will try to leave calmly.”

ZEGAMA AIZKORRI 2022: PROGRAM
Two years later the iconic image will be repeated: that we have remembered above: That with the runners wrapped up, feverish and carried on wings on the ascent of Santo Spiritu. An image that is already part of the collective memory of the corremontes.
The most mediatic mountain marathon in Spain, the Zegama-Aizkorri, returns this 2022 with all the honors: being the inaugural event of the Golden Trail World Series and celebrating its 21st edition, which will not lack the best in the world.
But not only will the Mendi Maratoia be held, but as in past editions there will be a Vertical Kilometer that will start at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 27, with a 3000 meters course joining Arriaundi with Iraule.
After the KM on Friday, the XXI. ZEGAMA-AIZKORRRI MENDI MARATOIA will be held on May 29, 2022 in the town of Zegama (Gipuzkoa) with departure at 9:00 am. With a route of 42,195 Km, with an accumulated elevation gained of 5,472 m
