SALOMON CROSS: THREE SHOES FOR MUDDY TRAILS. Salomon Wildcross 2, Madcross and Cross 2 PRO. Our TRAIL SHOES section has already presented the Salomon 2021-22 range some time ago. Now that autumn/winter arrives we use the magnifying glass on these shoes with great lugs for mud and fresh snow. Today we review three of them, well staggered.
All are specially designed for running in mud, but they are increasing price and benefits between them. From the basic Madcross to the popular Wildcross 2 and the elite Cross Pro 2. Let’s go with the technical analysis, by Mayayo.
SALOMON CROSS: MUDDY TRAILS SHOES
SALOMON WILDCROSS 2, MADCROSS Y CROSS 2 PRO
With the arrival of new rivals such as Hoka or the leap forward in mountain races this 2021 of running classics such as Asics, Saucony or New Balance, Salomon fights to maintain reputation as a leader of our sport, increasingly answering.
In fact, in the maximalist segment it is clearly trailing behind its rivals, having taken years to place its first item, the Salomon Ultra Glide. The same happens on asphalt, by the way, where it still lacks an elite shoe with carbon plate.
The autumn-winter 2021 Salomon trail running collection offers in return a very interesting and wide range for running on soft ground. It has options for all levels, of which today we present our particular Top3 of the season: The balanced WILDCROSS 2 for the popular; the basic MADCROSS to go racing and my personal favorite, the CROSS PRO 2 that without being a featherweight like the Slab, if it sticks to the foot and bites the mud with great confidence.
SALOMON WILDCROSS 2
The WILDCROSS 2 is made for running in all the wild places you like to go. This season WIldcross 2 comes with a price of 130€, 8mm drop and 5 mm lug depth and 308 gr.. This shoe likes to go far and fast, whether you’re on a local trail or whizzing through the wilderness. Try a pair and embrace your wilder self.
SALOMON WILDCROSS 2: DATA SHEET
- Price 130 €, it shares the price with the Speedcross 5 and it is 20 € more expensive than the Super Cross Blast and Alphacross Blast sisters.
- Drop: 8MM Lowered 2mm compared to the Speedcross 5 chassis to provide more stability and ground feel.
- Weight: 308 GRAMS.
- Ground height: 17-25mm. The usual height in most of the Salomon range, will not be strange for the brand fans.
- bContagrip TA. The Contagrip rubber sole features deep multidirectional lugs to improve mud traction. Created for maximum grip on slippery, soft or uneven surfaces, this rubber balances durability and grip.
- HORMIFIT FIT: This model changes much compared to the Speedcross last. Add space for toes, side wings of the SensiFit and a hydrophobic TUP mesh.
- QUICKLACE: The Classic of the brand is still present here. Easy to put on, easy to remove, no doubt.
- Enerziging damping: It is a high bounce midsole compound that offers exceptional energy return, plus a great cushioning and durability.
- Colors Black / Quiet Shade / Green Gecko
- There is also a version with GORE-TEX
SALOMON MADCROSS
Progressive in design, grippy and comfortable in delivery, the MADCROSS will appeal to those with an alternative taste for trail adventuring. Featuring a softer midsole for a cushy reception and multi-directional lugs set in a traction-packed outsole, this trail runner is a multi-tasker. Perfect for adventurous pathfinders. It comes with a price of 100€, 8 mm drop, 5mm lugs and 295 gr.
- Weight: 295 gr, a more than correct weight for a basic shoe since lightening while holding support and cushioning is what often conditions the face.
- Drop: 8 mm, medium drop, to put cushioning on the heel. Let’s not forget that it is a shoe for initiation and designed for heel supports, typical of those who do not master technique.
- Official price: 100 €, very competitive, strong point of this shoe. Of the three accessible shoes, its sisters Trailster 2 multipurpose 90o and Flow urbanita 80€ are even cheaper.
- Ground Height: 21,3 mm forefoot and 29,3 mm heel.
- The midsole applies a classic EVA foam to no more power.
- The sole is pure Salomon, a classic: Contagrip rubber but in this case mounts the compound Contagrip MD, a compound designed to provide greater durability with grip on all types of surfaces whether soft and wet or hard and dry.
- There is also a GORE-TEX verison
SALOMON CROSS PRO 2
This season the ultra-grippy CROSS PRO is back with a new heel counter to optimize the fit and up the comfort. You still get stacks of grip and stability to keep you performing to your best in those tougher-than-tough conditions. Not to mention MULTI-FIT technology that adapts to your foot shape and foot-hold preference. It comes with a 160€ price, 5 mm lugs, 290gr. and a 8 mm drop.
- Weight: 290 gr.
- Drop: 8 mm, medium drop, to put cushioning on the heel. Let’s not forget that it is a shoe for initiation and designed for heel supports, typical of those who do not master technique.

- Ground Height: 17 mm forefoot and 25 mm heel.
