The world’s best trail-running athletes will convene in the Canary Islands to define the 2021 Golden Trail World Series’ winners
It’s time! Originally programmed to be in Patagonia, the GTWS Grand Final 2021 will instead take place on a brand-new race route on El Hierro, a UNESCO listed World Biosphere Reserve and Geopark in the Canary Islands. After battling it out all season, the best trail runners on the planet now have the unique chance to double their points to win the Golden Trail World Series 2021!
This specially devised race will start in La Frontera (267m above sea level), at the heart of El Hierro Island. On 16th October at 9am the runners will set off on the volcanic slopes of this little-known island in the Canaries and head towards Jable de Mequena where, at kilometre 5.5, they will reach the highest point of the race (1354m above sea level). Here, they will dip over to the East side of the island to meet the ocean and the magnificent beaches at kilometre 14. Next, heading North to reach La Torre (877m above sea level) at kilometre 22, before plunging once again down towards the ocean to follow the coast from kilometre 26 to 28. A final climb will take them up and over to Valverde (621m above sea level) at kilometre 32, before hitting the last downhill towards the finish line oceanside in Tameduste.
THE ONE RACE: FAVORITE WOMEN
Before talking about who will be there, let’s take note of WHO is missing from this Grand Final. Currently 4th place in the overall general ranking, particularly thanks to her superb victory in the Dolomites and her 2nd place at Olla de Núria, Judith Wyder (Team Salomon/Red Bull, Switzerland) will not be on the start line at El Hierro due to a persistent injury she has had since Sierre-Zinal. She leaves a space for the other women alongside Maude Mathys (Team Salomon, Switzerland), leader of the overall general ranking and victorious in the three races she ran (Olla de Núria, Marathon du Mont- Blanc and Sierre-Zinal). The Swiss must nevertheless be wary of this year’s revelation: Nienke Brinkman (Team Salomon, The Netherlands). The Dutch woman has made a huge impression finishing second at Sierre-Zinal behind Maude Mathys, before cruising to an easy win at the CTR in Germany and the Skyrhune in France. Just behind her, Anaïs Sabrié (Team Hoka One One, France) will be eager to hold onto her third-place position, and even vying for the top podium spots. Currently in 5th position in the overall ranking, 78 points from the leader, Blandine L’Hirondel (Team Hoka One One, France) can also jostle for the podium. For Marcela Vasinova (Team Salomon, Czech Republic), the outlook is uncertain, barely recovered from an injury, yet with the absence of Judith Wyder, she’s hoping to be able to defend her chances and enter the top 5. Others to keep an eye on are Sara Alonso (Team Salomon, Spain), Dani Moreno (Team Hoka One One/Rabbit, USA), Élise Poncet (Team Matryx, France), and Caitlin Fiedler (Team Fiedler Fine Art, New Zealand).
THE ONE RACE: FAVORITE MEN
Like Maude Mathys for the women, Stian Angermund (Team Salomon, Norway) arrives at this Grand Final undefeated in all the races he participated in on this GTWS 2021 (Olla de Núria, Marathon du Mont-Blanc, DoloMyths Run). The Norwegian has a comfortable lead over Bart Przedwojewski (Team Salomon, Poland) second place in the overall ranking and 50 points behind. In third place is the Italian Davide Magnini (Team Salomon, Italy) whose best finish this year was the solid second place just behind Stian at the Marathon du Mont-Blanc. Closely followed by Rémi Bonnet (Team Salomon/Red Bull, Switzerland) who also secured a second place at Olla de Núria, behind Stian. Despite quitting two races, Elhousine Elazzaoui (Team Salomon, Morocco) remained tenacious throughout the season to seize a provisional 5th place and is now focusing on the podium. In sixth place is Thibaut Baronian (Team Salomon, France) who has been very consistent this year. After a difficult early season Francesco Puppi (Team Nike Trail, Italy) set the record straight in Germany, where he finished second and secured a 7th place in the overall ranking before the Grand Final. There are plenty of other guys to keep an eye on like Sylvain Cachard (Team Hoka One One, France), Frédéric Tranchand (Team Scott, France), or Jan Margarit Solé (Team La Sportiva, Spain) who managed to grab a place in the top 10 after his magnificent victory at the Skyrhune. Remember, even if they aren’t in the top 10 list, they should also be wary of the likes of Johann Baujard (Team Matryx, France) or Pascal Egli (Team Dynafit, Switzerland) who proved their skills at the Skyrhune after a complicated start to the season.
With the points being doubled and the season drawing to a close, the results of this unique Grand Final on El Hierro are still up in the air.
