ULTRA TRAIL AUSTRALIA CROWNS RUTH CROFT AND TIM BRIMELOW IN UTA50

More than 2,000 runners took the UTA50 start line, and the race is part of the four-day trail running festival, the largest event of its kind in the country. Races at ultra-trail Australia 2021 began on Thursday, May 13 with UTA11, with UTA22 held on Friday and UTA50 and UTA100 on Saturday, May 15th.

Tom Brimelow of the Gold Coast and Ruth Croft of New Zealand won the UTA50 men’s and women’s titles in Ultra-Trail Australia in the Blue Mountains. The two runners prevailed on the 50 km course, which included 2,450 m of positive elevation, with Brimelow ending at 4:35:44 and Croft at 4:52:09.

TOM BRIMELOW WINNER

Brimelow launched his attack for victory with just over a mile to go, taking the lead as he climbed the infamous Fuber Steps, the 951 stairs to the finish line at Scenic World. Luke Taylor was second in 4:37:36, with Gerald Macpherson 30 seconds back after leading much of the race.

“I’m completely fucked up, but very excited and it was amazing,” Brimelow said. “I felt like I was a long way off at first, but my pace felt pretty good. I was looking at my divisions and I was a little slower than I was a couple of years ago, but I kept trying to keep the effort constant and I was attracting people.

“I was pretty happy to get third and then I saw Courtney Atkinson walking at the last checkpoint and I knew I only had one more ahead of me. I thought I’d keep pushing and keep trying and at least get the second one, but I was pretty happy to find it at the foot of the stairs,” he said. “It was about 1.5 km away when I saw in front that Gerald was walking and it was a pretty flat section. I thought as long as I moved I should be fine and I tried to keep going up those stairs and keep crawling up. It’s unbelievable, to win now after being second last time. So I was very happy with that and I thought it would be hard to beat it This is such a big event… I certainly gave him more importance in training and it worked, it was brilliant, ” said Brimelow.

RUTH CROFT CHAMPION

New Zealander Ruth Croft arrived in Australia on Thursday night, but quickly got up to speed with the country’s biggest trail running event, and took the win for almost five minutes but it wasn’t easy at all…. Croft spent most of the 50 kilometres side by side with Sydney’s Paige Linegar, who finished at 4:56:49, and the two opened an advantage over the rest of the female competitors in a third of the race, with Anna McKenna. third at 5:12:22.

RUTH CROFT: I’m pretty to be honest, it was a tough day, especially the last 7km I fought a lot. I held back a little at first, we were four runners together and then, about in the 17km supply, I tried to launch a first attack. I wasn’t really sure how long Paige was following me. But after the long descent, and the next climb I looked over my shoulder and saw Paige, right there. So the last 7 km I’ve been running scared to the finish line. I kept looking over my shoulder because I wasn’t climbing so hard today. So, maybe I was lucky just before the stairs, that stretch was a little more apt to run and I think that’s where I was finally able to open the decisive gap.”
