TRANSGRANCANARIA 2021: LAST MINUTE COVID19 GRAN CANARIA

The 22nd edition of the race will be held between 24th and 28th February strictly following the relevant health protocols. The mountain races of Gran Canaria were especially fortunate this 2020 when the previous edition could be run with great success. It was practically the last big event of the year having the entire world elite. From China to the United States, through Italians, Spaniards and more, everyone found their place on the podium.

TRANSGRANCANARIA 2021 REDUCES THE REGISTRATION LIMIT FOR THE NEXT EDITION TO 50%

Next 2021 will be a special year for the Transgrancanaria. The race, which was able to celebrate its 21st edition last March as it moved ahead of the health alert situation, is already set its sights on next February to get the appointment forward. It seeks to demonstrate that outdoor sport is safe and more necessary than ever in the times we are living.

The event wants to be shielded by possible changes in sanitary conditions and will limit the sale of bibs for its six races. The organization is working on a possible restructuring of the agenda to comply with the relevant safety measures for the next edition. Thus, to comply with capacity regulations, the organization has reduced by 50% the number of places it will offer for the event scheduled for the week of February 24-28.

A decision made to comply with the health protocols set for the race and due to the changing situation that the world is going through, the organization wants to get ahead of the situation and limit the number of athletes. In this way, the organization wants to offer a rewarding and safe experience to participants who can access a bib number.

TRANSGRANCANARIA 2021 (23-28FEB) LAST MINUTE COVID19

It should be noted that in recent months, the Canary Islands present the best data from Spain in terms of cumulative incidence of positive cases of Covid-19. The measures taken by the Government of the Canary Islands have been very effective and the pandemic has not affected as much as elsewhere in Spain and the world.

However, as a preventive measure, the Government of the Canary Islands has decreed a Level of Alert 3 (red light) until the next 31st January, with new limitations affecting several sectors and, among them, sporting events However, the forecasts are optimistic that this level of Alert will return to 2 (yellow traffic light) on that date.

If so, the race can be held on the scheduled date (24-28 February) with the new protocols that from Arista Eventos have been implemented in the 5 races that we have been able to make in the last months. TRANSGRANCANARIA 2021: NEXT STEPS. OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION ON 1st FEB

On February 1st the organization will release a statement informing of the new alert situation in Gran Canaria.

  • A level 2 step would mean holding the Transgrancanaria on scheduled dates, and we would send an email to all participants with the health protocol that will be held during the event.
  • If the Alert Level 3 continues, the organization will place the new alert level update of the Government of the Canary Islands to make a decision regarding the holding of the test.

Whenever the Alert level is lowered to 2 before the week of the race, the Transgrancanaria can be carried out under the new health protocols.

From Arista Events, as the organizer of the event it is insisted that: “The organization remains in constant contact with the authorities for the celebration and the necessary permits to be able to hold an event that is very important for Gran Canaria and for the Canary Islands for the dynamization of economic resources that it entails, more necessary now than ever with the difficult situation that we are going through.
We understand the uncertainty felt by many athletes who have dreamed of Transgrancanaria for so many months and who are already in the final stretch of their preparation. We share the same feeling but we are very optimistic about the race and believe that the trail, as so many other sports are doing regardless of the alert level, should remain as long as the relevant security measures are met.”
