ISMF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS BOÍ TAULL 2023:
VERTCIAL RACE VICTORIES FOR BONNET & GACHET-MOLLARET
The ISMF World Championships 2023 continued on Wednesday with the Vertical race. This discipline may be about pure uphill performance, but today’s race was special. The cold wind and a high elevation made the not-too-steep course difficult, so the athletes had to dig deep.
The track was the same for all the age categories, with 500 metres of elevation on 3,4 kilometres. Not a steep start tempted the athletes to a fast start, but it could have caught up with them in the final metres.
MEN’S SENIOR RACE
The race of the elite men had a clear favourite before the start. Rémi Bonnet, the Vertical machine from Switzerland, won both World Cup Verticals this season, and today he again showed a dominant performance.
Swiss athlete was a minute faster than the second Maximilien Drion du Chapois of Belgium. Bonnet went for the glory from the start and ran almost the entire track.
The bronze medal was won by Gedeon Pochat Cotilloux of France, his first podium in the elite category. Anselme Damevin (France) and Werner Marti (Switzerland) closed the Top 5 of the men’s race.
WOME’S SENIOR RACE
The women’s race also had a clear favourite who could fulfil her role. Frenchwoman Axelle Gachet-Mollaret defended her title from 2021. The race was in her control from the opening hundred metres. She won by more than half a minute.
Sarah Dreier won the silver medal, her first at the World Championships. Alba de Silvestro came in bronze place. It is the first medal for the Italian athlete from the World Championships in this discipline. Fourth finished Marcela Vašínová of the Czech Republic, and the Top 5 was closed by Johanna Hiemer of Austria.
U23 Men
The U23 men’s winner, Anselme Damevin of France, finished just behind the elite podium in fourth place, his best result for the new U23 champion among the elite. The silver medal in this category went to Thomas Bussard of Switzerland, while Paul Verbnjak of Austria took the bronze.
U23 Women
Italy topped the U23 women’s category thanks to Katia Mascherona (winner) and Lisa Moreschini (second). The winner of this category also rounded out the Top 10 of the elite race. Yesterday’s gold medalist Caroline Ulrich claimed the bronze medal in the U23 Women.

U20 Men
Oriol Olm Rouppert of Andorra took glory in the U20 men’s race after a tough battle with a group of athletes.
“I decided to change the rhythm halfway through the race, and it worked. I just felt it. It was very tight, and it made the race intense. I’m so happy to be the world champion, it’s a dream. And happy for my country, which is growing little by little,” said Olm Rouppert.
Loïc Dubois came second, just 11 seconds behind the winner. Julian Tritscher of Austria was the third fastest. Tritscher’s compatriot Hannes Lohfeyer finished fourth, and George Jinga of Romania fifth.
U20 Women
The U20 Women’s race was quite a spectacle. In the first part of the track small group formed in the front. Thibe Deseyn of Switzerland had the best tactics and legs to win the gold medal.
“From the start, we went with a group of five. Then, in the steep part, Louise Trincaz and I went together. I waited for the last steep part to go full gas,” said Deseyn.
Second in the finish was Louise Trincaz of France, and Noemi Junod of Italy claimed the bronze medal. Ida Waldal (Norway) and Quzhen Souland (China) finished fourth and fifth.
