A shoe created by the Finnish from Karhu with a great history in the running industry since 1916 and tones of gold medals in different summer Olympic Games.

KARHU, FOUNDED IN 1916 IN FINLAND.

Who is KARHU? Ab sportartiklar Oy established in 1916 a small workshop in downtown Helsinki and began crafting locally sourced birch into skis, javelins, and discuses. The workshop eventually develops running shoes which land on the feet of Ville Ritola and Hannes Kolehmainen, the first “Flying Finn”.

In 1920 the company name changed to Karhu, the Finnish word for “bear”. The Flying Finns dominated tracks around the world garnering much recognition for Karhu, and Paavo Nurmi wins nine Olympic gold medals in the now famed Finnish footwear.

In 1950, Karhu dominated the 1952 Olympics Games in Helsinki with fifteen gold medal performances, three of which come on the feet of Emil Zatopek. Riding the wave of success, Karhu sells its three stripes trademark to a now well-known athletic shoe company (adidas) that still uses it to this day.

1960- Karhu officially registers its famous M-logo—the only trademark used in running shoes—meant to represent “Mestari”, the Finnish word for “champion”. Various designs of the M-logo adorn Karhu shoes over the years and are still in use today.

KARHU IKONI TRAIL: HIGHLIGHTS

UPPER

A very compact upper mesh which seems to offer a very good protection with an integrated tongue and a front TPU rock protection in the very spacious Toe Bumper for protection from roots and rocks with the asymmetric lacing system which allows adjustments on the fly.

MIDSOLE

The Ikoni Trail features plush AeroFoam Trail cushioning and a 5mm heel-toe drop for protection underfoot without sacrificing ground feel.

The Fulcrum is an advanced propulsion system designed to Move Forward by offering balanced cushion, increased support, and more energy at toe-off.

SOLE

The main highlight of the sole is the very prominent M-lugs & T-lugs (5mm) for superior grip on the uphill, downhill, wet, and dry, which for sure will provide a great grip but obviously also add some weight into the  shoe (350 grams) and maybe made them not so easy to ride in compact terrain.

These are shoes designed for long distance that can give a lot of play to those of us who like oversize shoes, which prioritize comfort, but also offer great durability.

They are robust enough to tackle alpine terrain in almost any state, as well as push them to the limit and descend fast like a lighter trail shoe, and the 5 mm lugs offers sufficient safety in almost all conditions, however the weight of 350 grams is maybe a handicap and move them more into a hiking oriented shoe.
