20º MUNDIAL MOUNTAIN RUNNING MASTERS WMRA
TEFLES 2021. 600 ATHLETES
In 2021 the twentieth edition of the World Veterans Championship, coordinated by the WMRA with the World Masters Athtletics of world athletics took place from 3-5SEP in Telfes. Here you can reread the previous one that we published WORLD MASTERS WMRA 2021.
There were two different routes according to categories, both sharing a same goal at the top of the Kreuzjoch (2130m).
The men’s categories M35 to M50 had to run the long distance of 11.5 km and a slope of 1157m. All female categories had to make a distance of 7.4 km, with a slope of 775m.
The same applied to male categories aged 55 and over.
As many as 600 athletes from 21 nations participated in the event. The german contingent was, logically as host, the largest with 210 runners, followed by its vcecinas Italy and Austria.
These numbers were also reflected in the medal table: Germany finished in the lead with six individual gold medals and nine team gold medals, followed by Italy (9) and Austria (5).
The best mark in the race went to M40 winner Thomas Roach (GBR), who finished in a time of 58:05.5. It did not surprise much, since it is a runner with marks of 1h09 in half marathon and 2h28 in marathon who is also based in Austria and regularly wins great mountain races in the Alps, such as the Tour del Tirol 2021. The female winner with the best result was Simone Raatz (GER) of the W45 category with a time of 44:29.7.
Web The winner here was from Italy: Franco Torresani became world champion with the best score of the day of 41:25.2. As in all major WMRA competitions, each winner at the end of the race had to pass a doping test, for which they provide at least one urine sample.
Anecdotally, in thamos’ case it was a bit complicated as he was very dehydrated. A first attempt just 60ml so it was necessary to rehydrate the runner to complete the process.
THOMAS ROACH, WORLD CHAMPION DISQUALIFIED FOR CANNABIS
Unfortunately, a few days ago we learned that the World Masters Champion in Tefles 2021, Thomas Roach, has been officially disqualified because the anti-doping control confirmed his cannabis use. The disqualification affected the individual and team classification.
Here you can read the full official document of WORLD ATHLETICS: : It explains two important things. The first, because the intake of cannabis is penalized as a substance of abuse. The second, because after the legal process foreseen the sanction applied is the disqualification of the athlete and the prohibition of competing for the following three months.
Facing the competition, the podium now consists of Simon Lechleiner, Galen Burrel and Johanes Hilldebrand, By countries, Germany, Austria and Italy. To compensate the injured athletes, the WMRA will hold a new 2021 awards ceremony during the 2022 World Masters Championship to be held in September in Ireland, which we detail below.
MUNDIAL MOUNTAIN RUNNING MASTERS 2022 EN COMERAGH, IRLANDA. (2-4SEP)
It seems clear that the intake of cannabis was not to achieve a malicious advantage in competition on the part of Thomas, so perhaps the moral of the story is to look at the competition involved. And note that it is worth also organizing competitions at the highest level for veterans.
Treating them of course with the utmost sporting respect, such as absolute senior elite athletes. World Cup, medals, ceremony, teams… and of course, doping control.
IF you dare, surely the atmosphere in Cork is magnificent this summer. Here the offical event website
