VAUDE MOAB II WIND JACKET ULTRALIGHT:
FROM SELLARONDA TO SÖLDEN. TEST +600 KM BY STEFFI

Since receiving the jacket, we noticed the fabric feels very pleasant on the skin touch. As you know, some wind breakers and or light waterproof jackets give us the feeling of “plastic” when in contact with the skin, but it is not the case with this VAUDE Moab II Wind Jacket.

Apart from its “touch” the other feature that stands out is its packability, but beforegoing into detail, lets see one by one all the highlights and the different photos that show the different usages we have tested on, from hikes in the Zillertal Alps, to different bike parks like Molveno, Livigno, Sölden or the mytical Sellaronda with around than 70km of MTB in the middle of the Dolomites.

VAUDE MOAB II WIND JACKET ULTRALIGHT HIGHLIGHTS

WINDPROOF

For such a light weight jacket, the Windproof 80 functionalityreally keeos you going, and not only with summer winds, but also with more colder headwind as we tested in Sölden in the first weekend of September, where the temperatures where not that pleasant.

The fabric’s extra dense construction (achieved by weave, finish or processing) makes it 80% windproof. What’s left of the wind is a pleasant, cool breath of fresh air offering a really good breathability. This technology is a great choice for windy weather conditions in high-motion mountain and bike sports.

Obviosly, the weight and properties of this jacket do not substitute a third layer Gore-Tex but its behaviour in temperatures about 10°C and not rainy conditions make it really a must to keep in your backpak.

WEIGHT & PACKABILITY

With only 85 grams it has a great pack size which make it very practical. It fits in a trouser pocket in case of need, and apart from being packable in its own bag, the same bag/pocket has a double function: you can carry your mask (our daily companion now a days) with you  handkerchiefs, card or keys.

The Ultralight icon identifies VAUDE backpacks and clothes that belong to the lightest in their class available on the market today. Their minimal weight is made possible by extremely lightweight materials and by paring them down to the most necessary features.

WATER REPELLENT

As mentioned above this wind jacket does not substitute a Gore-Tex or membrane jacket, but it is also thure that we dont need one always. The water repellent Eco Finish developed by VAUDE, make this wind jacket been manufactured with a water repellent Eco Finish. Applied to the surface of them, it causes rainwater to simply bead up on the surface – without the use of environmentally-harmful fluorocarbons (PFC). Eco Finish protects you from the rain and helps keep nature clean.

We were able to tested also in rainy conditions and as you can see in the picture below, it keeps you dry, obviously is the rain continues for a long period of time, the wind jacket gets also wet, as we insist id does not substitute a menbrane jacket, but it does a great job and it gets dry really quick.

FIT & FABRIC

The fabric is very pleasant on contact with the skin to the point that is hardly noticeable on the skin and it does not give that “plastic” feeling that other wind jackets give. The strech inserted under the arms helps on the arms movement and the inserts are made out of wool, which prevent the sweat odor.

Another thing that claimed our attention, has been the zip. It might sound as a very normal thing, however we are sure you have used some jackets, where the zip does not go as smooth as you would like or it hurts in the chin. In the case of this Moab Wind Jacket Ultralight, the zip goes as smooth as it can be, making it really easy to open or close when needed. On the upper part of the neck, its covered with fabric, so that you do not scratch your chin.

The end of sleeves on the wrist, are also very comfortable. The rubber bandon at the “hip collar” is not too tight so it has a loose fit on your hips, but still lying on them so the air does not enter while riding.

On the size, I normally would have used a XS/34 however the XS in this case was a little too big, so bare it in mind when ordering it.

CONCLUSION AFTER +600KM BY STEFFI

After almost 4 months using it in my everyday MTB, Gravel and/or hiking adventures I have not noticed ana changes after washing it and or any defects in the fabric. Due to the small pack size, I had it with me on many tours. Especially in spring/summer when it can get fresh in the evening, I had it as a valuable companion.

As the color very inconspicuous, it fits with everything, so you can also wear it on your everyday life, moreover if you are doing any city trips where you do not to take a “big” jacket with you, this can also be the great option in case it gets little cold.

Summarizing, a great companion for any single spring/summer tours, or even in early autumn, where a light jacket is needed and also can be combined with your everyday activities with a minimun weight and a great ratio between price/weight/quality and the multiple usage from MTB, Trailrunning, Gravel, hiking or City touring, so this VAUDE Moab II Wind Jacket Ultralight will staill have a lot adventures ahead with me in the next season.
