2020 SKYRUNNING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS VERTICAL KILOMETER. Our SKYRUNNING section starts today the first of the three modalities of this world, which for the third time in new years hosts the Buff Epic Trail, undoubtedly privileged by the federation.

Today the VK starts, the Ultra will follow tomorrow and skyrace will close on Sunday. The Spanish team is the big favorite, with a team as you can see below, formed by Virginia Pérez, Oihana Kortazar, Silvia Lara, Daniel Osanz, Pere Rullan, Manuel Merillas.

The Aigüestortes and Lake San Maurici National Park is one of the fourteen natural parks in Spain and the only one in Catalonia. Located in the heart of the Pyrenees, together with the parks of Ordesa and Monte Perdido and that of the French Pyrenees, it is an excellent representation of the main ecosystems that we can discover in the high Pyrenean mountain.

The route chosen for the World Cup is very hard: It is a race on foot of about 2.8km and 1,000 m of positive slope; It consists of a great ascent with departure in the town of Barruera. It is a demanding test, which will benefit the elites who arrive with a lot of power and experience in this type of climbing so vertical.

While in the women category, athletes like Marcela Vasinova – (CZE) – (European Combined Champion), Iris Pessey – (FRA) – (2018 AMA VK2 winner), Viriginia Perez – (ESP) – (Ultraks 46K 2018 winner), Fatima de Diego – (ESP) – (2017 VK Youth Champion), Lina El Kott Helander – (SWE) – (5^th 2018 VKWC, Olympus VK winner, joint 2021 Monte Rosa SkyMarathon winner), Sanna El Kott Helander – (SWE) – (joint 2021 Monte Rosa SkyMarathon winner) will fight for the title tooo in these 3,3km with 1000 elevation gain.

As planned, this tough Vertical Kilometer has confirmed the big favorites. He has crowned a splendid Ruy Ueda among the men, with 35.06. Silver for a solid Daniel Osanz in his favorite mode, with 35.38 and bronze for his young Italian rival De Lorenzi with 35.55.
After them, Pere Rullán entered sixth with 37.20 and Merilas closed the top10 with 38.29, which complicates the combined with respect to the Japanese.

In the women’s, Gold for Marcela Vasinova with 41.00 silver for Oihana Kortazar with 43.14 and bronze for Iris Pessey with 44.26, while the two Swedish twins completed the top5. A result of the vertical that leaves the swords in all the heights for the combined, where four of the top five aspire to victory on Sunday in the Skyrace 42km to get on the combined podium.

As with the boys, Silvia Lara was sixth in goal and Virginia Perez tenth.
