GOLDEN TRAIL CHAMPIONSHIP AZORES: THE WORLD WMRA 2019 PODIUM RUNS AGAIN: WALMSLEY, PUPPI AND CARDONA.

AZORES TRAIL RUN HOLDS THE SALOMON GOLDEN TRAIL CHAMPIONSHIPS: The 2019 WMRA World Cup podium is again runnig in a competition, with Jim Walmsley, Francesco Puppi and Oriol Cardona in the race. In the females race, Oihana Kortazar, Gisela Carrión, Maude Mathys or Ruth Croft will also be running. A great cast for which it may be the last big mountain race in 2020.

As we shared last week, the Salomon Golden Trail Championship consists on four stages with the world’s elite in the race, through the islands of Faial and Pico in the Azores (Portugal), from 28th OCT to 1st NOV. Let’s start with the short official presentation video.


GOLDEN TRAIL CHAMPIONSHIP AZORES.  28th OCT

Everything is ready for the Salomon’s Golden Trail Championship to start in the Azores. Some of the best trail runners, from all around the world will compete from 29th October until 1st November in a 4 stages race, under the organization of the Azores Trail Run®️. The four stages are between 26 km and 36 km and with a total of 126 km and 6,200 meters of positive elevation.

Among the favorites we can highlight the complete podium of the last World Mountain Running WMRA 2019, from Patagonia last year: Jim Walmsley, Francisco Puppi and Oriol Cardona. In addition there will be Stian Angermund-Vik, Rémi Bonnet, Maude Mathys, Ruth Croft, Holly Page, Gisela Carrión or Eli-Anne Dvergsdal.

PROGRAM 29th OCT-1st NOV

Some of the best trail runners from about 20 countries will meet in the Salomon Golden Trail Championship. The event will have all the specific preventive protocol related to the Covid-19.

This year the Golden Trail Championship replaces, with this single race, the third edition of the International Golden Trail World Series circuit, which could not be held normally due to the exceptional situation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

GOLDEN TRAIL 2020: FAVORITES.

All participants will have to pass a PCR test before arriving and once they arrive in the archipelago and must wear a mask at all times except at the time of running.

In the men’s category stands out the world podium, formed by Walmsley, Puppi and Cardona who face each other again for the first time after that spectacular K42 Patagonia 2019. Besides, there’ll be Stian Angermund, winner of the Golden Trail World Series in 2018 and 3rd in last year’s general classification, Jan Margarit Bart-omyej Przedwojewski, always a finalist in the top 5 in the GTWS races, Rémi Bonnet, who demonstrated his way into the KV this summer, the Portuguese Romeu Gouveia and André Rodrigues, Max King, Nicolas Martin, Ludovic Pommeret , Juan Carlos Carera or Pascal Egli, among many other big names in trail running.

At the women’s race, the protagonists will be Maude Mathys, holder of the Pikes Peak record (2019) and winner of Sierre Zinal 2020, Ruth Croft, first at the 2019 Mont-Blanc Marathon and 2018 Golden Trail World Series champion Elisa Desco, second in Zegama in 2019, Holly Page, second in Ring of Steall 2019, Eli-Anne Dvergsdal, winner at Zegama 2019 , the Portuguese Ins Marques, Gisela Carrión, Fanny Borgstrom, Oihana Kortázar and Tove Alexandersson, 10 times world champion orienteering, among others.

AZORES TRAIL RUN, THE RACES.

In a four-day period, all runners will accumulate a distance of almost 126 km km and 6,200 m of elevation. The absolute champion will be awarded, but also the best climber, best down hill runner and sprinter. After the daily stage, the leaders of the different sections (uphill, downhill, sprint, general) will receive a special color race bib: General Leader – yellow; Climber Leader – red; Leader Bajador – blue; Sprint Leader – Green.
