CANFRANC PIRINEOS 2025:
WORLD MOUNTAIN AND TRAIL RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIPS CANDIDATE
Canfranc-Pirineos 2025 started today, January 12, in the footsteps of our ancestors. Canfranc was born by and to be a meeting place for both sides of the Pyrenees, the Summus Portus of the first pilgrims to Santiago, until the inauguration of the International Station in 1928.
This morning at 9 a.m. from the Alurte mountain risk management center, in Canfranc Estación, the candidacy for the 2025 World Athletics Mountain and Trail World Championship was presented. This is an ambitious project to celebrate in the Pyrenees, which would host a major sporting event for a week, together with a mountain festival with multiple activities to enjoy the best of nature, history and traditions of the Pyrenees.
January 12, 2023, Canfranc. Given the international significance of the project, the CANFRANC-PIRINEOS 2025 candidacy is promoted and led by the Aragon General Council, whose General Director of Sports, Mariano Soriano, was the host of the event this morning. The manager of TUHUESCA, Fernando Blasco, the mayor of Canfranc, Fernando Sánchez, Alex Varela, director of Canfranc-Canfranc, and Sergio Mayayo as representative of the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA) world council also attended.
A HUNDRED YEARS LATER, CANFRANC CONTINUES TO ADVANCE
Canfranc has shown that, with tenacity, drive and enthusiasm, a mountain town can reverse the problem of “Rural Spain”. The recent celebrations of the renovated train station, plus the new esplanade and the imminent opening of the 5* Superior Barceló Royal Hideaway Hotel, join projects to continue making this magical corner of the Aragonese Pyrenees known.
Almost one hundred years after the birth of the iconic station, on July 18, 1928, Canfranc has recovered all its splendor and wants to do so also in sports. The Pyrenees have been the cradle of the best mountain sports in the world, Nordic and alpine skiing, mountain biking, biathlon and mountain racing. This mountain range has forged many world champions, children of its nature and traditions.
THE ARAGONESE PYRENEES TO BE THE WORLD HEADQUARTERS OF MOUNTAIN AND TRAIL RUNNING
The Canfranc Canfranc is already a world-class event. His long career will walk in 2025 towards the 20th anniversary. By then it will have hosted several Spanish “Trail Running RFEA” Championships, at least 3 editions of the “Mountain Running WMRA” World Cup and even its first “WMRA Master” World Cup, which is already in preparation for 2024.
After having opted to host the 2023 Absolute Mountain and Trail World Championship, where he was a finalist after the double winter Olympic venue in Innsbruck (Austria), Canfranc today announced his second assault on said challenge, fighting once again to bring the most important event in the world of this sport to the Pyrenees. It will also be a historic occasion to celebrate the 40th anniversary of that competition, born in 1985 from WMRA and refounded together with World Athletics, IAU and ITRA in the new unified “World Mountain and Trail Running Championship”, which started in Thang Mai 2022 (Thailand). ).
The final decision of World Athletics will be known prior to the Innsbruck 2023 Mountain and Trail World Championship that will take place from June 6 to 10.
