Around 170 athletes, where we will have more men (90) than women (80), will fight in the jungle of Chiangmai, to crown the new World Champions after Jim Wamsley(USA) and Cristina Simion (RO) won the Patagonia WMRA 2019 World Cup.

SHORT TRAIL RACE PREVIEW & FAVOURITES
38KM | 2.425M+
The last world grand final of this modality was the one we lived in Patagonia 2019, crowning the American Jim Walsmley and the Romanian Cristina Simion.
However, as part of the process of unification of the World Cup. WMRA agreed to cede the management of its traditional Long Distance modality, while maintaining that of its other two oldest modalities, Uphill and Classic original since 1985. In this way, from IAU-ITRA the Ultra is managed and now assumes the Marathon, thus distributing the workload between both associations.
WMTRC THAILAND 2022 SHORT TRAIL: THE RACE
As you can see below, this 2022 we have a shorter and M-shaped track, that is, two great climbs and two large descents, plus a final approach to the finsih. The track will be on its largest part single trail with a stretch of gravel that according to the organization does not exceed 6km.
The strategy in the distribution of energy in the race will be vital, as will be the point where the key attack is to break the race, The second great climb or the final gravel section, seem a priori the two most suitable for it.
The conditions of heat and humidity, with temperatures of up to 30ºC and an average daily rain in November in Chiang Mai of 21mm will be demanding for everyone.
Curiously, quite the opposite than three years ago with the dry cold and the frozen rivers of Patagonia, where a fall into the water at km12 left the great favorite Maude Mathys out of the race due to hypothermia.
Of the 170 athletes in the race, we will have more men (90) than women (80). As for the teams, the WMRA rules stipulate that in the team event although up to six can register, officially only a maximum of four compete per country (close nominations 3 NOV-10h)
WMTRC THAILAND 2022 : PRIZES & POINTS
Every team has support from World Athletics, which will pay each federation a fund of between $1,000 (for registering two athletes) to $5,000 if four full teams are registered. With five events for both genders, a federation can register up to 10 teams, making it generous support.
The cash prizes are also important, as they total 50,000 USD distributed equally among the four senior events as follows for the top 5 in of each sex and modality: 4.000 – 2.000 – 1.000 – 750 – 500
As usual in World Athletics, no cash prize will be paid until the results of the mandatory WADA controls at the finish line certify the winners.
Of these, only the first three score at the finish line, and they do so with the classic criteria of Mountain Running from 1985 until today: 1 Point for the first, 2 for the second, 3 for the third. Then the points of the first three of each team are added and the one with the least points is the world champion team
For the marathon, we will have 16 women’s teams in contention as well as another 15 men’s, so that the medals will be disputed, both for the quality and quantity of teams.
SHORT TRAIL MOUNTAIN RUNNING: THE FAVORITES.
In addition to the individual medals, team medals will also be awarded, where Spain and France defends the team men’sand women’s gold medals, and USA and Romania the individuals achieved at WMRA Patagonia 2019
WOMEN’S RACE
In the women’s race there are 75 athletes registered, with several world elites such as Sheila Avilés (SPA) OCC UTMB 2022 Winner, Nuria Gil (SPA) and Anna Comet (SPA), or the Americans Allie Mc Laughlin and Stevie Kremer, the Italian Camilla Magliano, the Romanian Denisa Dragomir and the very powerful Swedish twins Lina and Sanna El Kot.
Among the almost 100 entries we enjoy European medalists, world champions and also winners of the World Cup. The 2019 world silver is now back for gold, with the Italian Francesco Puppi who arrives after a very unstable 2022, accompanied by a Martin de Matteis very fast, but who rises here in distance.
Another key favorite must be the British Jonathan Albon who may be penalized by the low technical difficulty of the route, as well as the jungle environment. This luxury quartet is completed by the Norwegian Stian Angemund , whose talent is perfectly known by the Spanish fans after his victories in Zegama or Olla de Nuria.
From France there is never a lack of firm values such as Frederic Tranchard or Kevin Vermelen. So are the Romanian based in Spain Ionut Zinca. In the USA team it will be interesting to see how riders like Zach Miller or Max King adapt to this profile.
Spain again has a solid team. Unlike the women’s, here an individual podium seems more complex. with the exception of an Antonio Martínez who after shining with the silver of OCC 53 Chamonix, has been several weeks sharing concentration with the very fast Andreu Blanes. Let’s go now with the teams.
TEAMS
WOMEN: There are no less than 16 women’s teams with 3 registered or more for this test, where France, Spain, Sweden and the USA contribute five athletes each, while curiously Italy for once does not exhaust maximum and stays in only four, as does Great Britain.
Spain and Sweden seem clear favorites for gold and silver, leaving the bronze open between the USA, Italy and France especially.
MEN: With 16 complete teams, it is striking that in addition to powers such as France, the USA and Italy, Argentina and Thailand also registered the maximum of 6 athletes. Spain stays at 5, like Great Britain.
The men’s medals seem much more open, with the great powers opting for a distribution among them of the three places. A good or bad day of any team can be decisive, especially with the timing system that governs this test.
