The upcoming edition of the Zafiro Palma Marathon Mallorca has been presented today, that will bring together 6,000 runners this Sunday from 8 a.m. amongst the three possible distances (9, 21 and 42km).

ZAFIRO PALMA MARATHON 2022 (9OCT) 6.000 RUNNERS 60 COUNTRIES

The Zafiro Palma Marathon Mallorca 2022 has been officially presented today and will take place this Sunday from 8AM with 1,000 more participants than in 2021.

In total there will be 6,000 runners taking part amongst the three distances: 9k, 21k or marathon (42,197 meters) of the largest athletic event in the Balearic Islands.

This is the largest athletic event in the Illes Balearics. In total, participation grows compared to 2021 by about a thousand athletes, and the percentage of female participation stands out, unprecedented in Spain: 42%. In addition, it is one of the most international events on the European calendar, with 66 countries represented at the starting line and more than 80% of foreign runners among those registered in the three distances.

The side events have also started yeterday to complete a fun sport weekend, such as the Breakfast Run this morning, with some 200 runners, or the official opening of the Runner’s Expo at the Parc de la Mar.

Today will be the Pasta Party and on Sunday there will be a big post-event party at Mega Park Playa de Palma.

Maria del Carmen Paredes, a paralympic athlete with visual impairment (T-12), will be at the starting line. She is currently preparing the Valencia Marathon in search of the World Champ Standard that will enable her to participate in the Paris 2023. Carmen will also be supported by her colleagues from the ONCE of the Balearic Islands.

The organization has also made a significant effort to continue making the Zafiro Palma Marathon one of the most sustainable sporting events in Europe with recycled materials for athlete’s bag, medals, finisher t-shirts and a minimum CO2 emissions.

ZAFIRO PALMA MARATHON 2022: “DORSAL ORO” FOR EMILIO DE LA CAMARA

The event will recognize the legend of the veteran athlete Emilio de La Camara, the most successful age grouper athlete in Spain, and will receive the ” Dorsal de Oro” succeeding Toni Peña and Miquel Capo in this honor.

De La Camara has developed his entire successful sports career in Mallorca, adding 76 medals in international track and field events, road races and cross-country championships, he has set 14 Spanish records in different distances and age groups, as well as 19 participations in World Championships.

“I am very excited about this beautiful recognition that I will receive from the organization. After a lifetime dedicated to running, being able to be like this at the start of the Zafiro Palma Marathon with so many teammates is a huge satisfaction,” said Emilio de La Camara.

In addition, he has been named as “Best Spanish Master Athlete” in 2004, 2005, and 2010, European of the year 2010 and Medal of Honor for sports merit from the Consell de Mallorca.
