EHUNMILAK 2022:
VICTORIES FOR JAVI DOMÍNGUEZ & ELENA CALVILLO.
Already from the start, the return maintained the two key references to the popular, with all the numbers exhausted to add about 1,300 registered, all attended by a total of 1,600 volunteers, something unique in the world.
In terms of sports, the three days did not give any truce, highlighting the new G2H record for Aritz Egea and lel sextete of txapelas Ehunmilak achieved by Javi Dominguez (2011-14-16-17-18-22 A career that three years after that ceiling reached in 2019 has shown that it maintains all its vigor and that own spirit, different that falls in love, of the Highlands of Euskadi to the whole world.
And, Ehunmila knows how to resist and overcome: From the bitterness of the suspension forced in 2018 by a fierce thunderstorm with up to 2,000 lightning in two hours jumped in 2019 to the perfect edition, with all the numbers sold out for the first time in its hstoria and no less than five records in its six modalities, male and female for the three races. Three years later, Ehunmilak 22 has returned maintaining the tone of that dream 2019, which was in itself a challenge.
EHUNMILAK 2022 168KM: SIXTH VICTORY FOR JAVI DOMINGUEZ AND THE FIRST GOLD OF ELENA CALVILLO
Spectacular the mastery of career that these two great veterans gave us. A Javi Dominguez who has been and is, the true emperor of the Goierri with seven victories in eleven editions of the test. An Elena Calvillo who took the start with 52 years, determined to achieve gold after several podiums accumulated in the previous years.
Both left us a great show from start to finish, entering champions with enormous superiority: Javi with 23h04, Elena with 28.53. After them, the men’s podium was completed by Ander Erice with 25h36 and Oscar Pérez de Nancclares with .25h59. In the women’s, rene Guembe debuted in a hundred miles in a big way, with a sterling silver in 29h39, while Leire Martinez closed the podium with 29h57
EHUNMILAK 2022: GOIERRIKO BI HAUNDIAK – 88K
GOLD & RECORD FOR ARITZ EGEA
In the 88km race this year the highest level of sport was concentrated. At the start at 23h from Beasaín, names such as Aritz Egea (Champion Marimurumendi) Tofol Castanyer and Jon Aizpuru (record Ehunilak 168k) Stood Out.
Once the race was launched, the pace of the leading trio of Aritz, Tófol and Jon immediately relieved any pursuer, passing through the first great control in Larraitz after just 17k already with 3min of open gap. It was from there when Ariiz, on the ascent to Txindoki was left alone in the lead maintaining a record pace, with the 10h01 of Ion Azpiroz in 2019 as a reference.
The eleven editions of G”H had never seen anyone achieve an under-10h in goal. But as he continued his solo ride it became clear that this was the year. From behind, both Tofol and Jon paid for the effort of the start at the fast pace of the Aritz rocket, but they knew how to join forces to share the race to the finish.
The goal of Beasaín celebrates a historic time of 9h51 for Aritz Egea. If in 2016 he opened the inaugural edition of Marimurumendi 42k with gold and record, here he doubled the bet again with gold and record also in the 88k. Why not think that it will go even further, and assault the 168k in the future? He himself recognized in goal that, after this experience, he no longer discards it at all.
The men’s silver went to a brilliant Goar Lopetegui with 10.09 and the bronze to Joseba Escudero with 10.16. The fourth place went to Adur Mendizábal with 10.28 and closed the top5 entering the alimón Tofol and Jon with 10.47
The women’s race had several alternatives in the lead until Gemma Barrabeig took the lead to pull hard in the final third and stand out to the finish. The runner from Reus completed a great debut here with a time of 14.06 while Amaia Larreatgui came second with 14.33 and Amaia Ochoa de Olza closed the trio of heads with 15h06
EHUNMILAK 2022 THE WITCH’S MARATHON, MARIMURUMENDI FOR ALVARO RAMOS AND LARRAITZ ARAGON.
In the marathon Marimurumendi Alvaro Ramos came to settle outstanding accounts… and he did it without giving options. He took his head shortly after leaving and did not stop until he crossed the champion finish line with 3h39. After the arrival of Iñigo Arantzamendi (3h44) and Martin Mc-Gragh (3h49)
If Alvaro was the great veteran and race favorite, the women’s event saw the opposite. Larraitz Aragón debuted in the mountain marathons with a great performance. Like Alvaro, he led from the first ramps and always set a pace that only widened the gap to the finish line. Gold for Durango, with 4h44, silver for Cristina Fargas with 5h01 and bronze for María Sanchez Casado with 5h03.
The balance of these first eleven years of Ehunmilak closes with enormous joy. A satisfaction shared by the abundant public, the 1,600 volunteers of the Goierri and the 1,300 runners who from 17 countries came to live here what many have defined as a unique race, for three reasons: The beauty and hardness of the route, which runs through two natural parks and allows to crown icons of the Basque mountain such as Txindoki and Aizkorri;
The strength of the organization, with each volunteer focused on making sure that every runner has what they need, at the time they need it.
And of course, that Gipuzkoan fan base that turned over for three days with the peloton, sleeping in tents on the ridges, forming spectacular human corridors like Larraitz’s, in the middle of the early hours of Friday and making once again that of: “In the Ehunmilak, you never run alone”
