WORLD MOUNTAIN & TRAIL CHAMPIONSHIPS
THAILAND MOVE UP 3-6NOV
As the WMRA (World Mountain Running Association) has just made official today, the first edition of the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships (WMTRC) scheduled for November 11-14, 2021 in Chiang Mai, Thailand will be finally held NOV 3-6, 2022.
According to the official sources, following discussions with the Local Organising Committee, the decision has been made to bring the date of the Championships forward, to 3rd – 6th November.
The reason why alleged was that when the event was postponed back in NOV21 to 19-20 NOV 2022 those original dates now clash with the final summit meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Forum, being held in Bangkok
The local organising committee claims holding both events on the same dates is not advisable owing to extra security surrounding the visit of key heads of state, potentially leading to inconvenience for visiting athletes and staff. On the other hand, the programme is unchanged, as is the hotel accommodation and the other key locations.

PROGRAM AND LOCATION.
The first unified World Athletics has five events: The four WMRA classics (Uphill, Classic, Long Distance and U18 world cup) that have been held by WMRA since 1985. Plus the fifth, coming from the IAU Ultra World Championship that was born in 2007.
The first unified Championships in history will therefore consist of a four-day, action-packed program. Thailand’s candidacy was the only one that stood firm until the end, at the time among the 50 pre-candidates. Therefore, the verification from World Athletics has focused more on ensuring the technical and logistical capacity of the local organizing committee, since it did not have any direct final rival.
Located 700 km north of Bangkok, on the banks of the Ping River, Chiang Mai offers a very striking landscape, for many perhaps the largest and most beautiful in the northern part of Thailand. The mountainous environment and the city’s growing reputation for massive outdoor sporting events make it, as proclaimed since its candidacy, the perfect place to host the first unified World Championships in the history of world athletics.
UNIFICATION WMRA – IAU – ITRA
This new biennial event further develops the partnership between the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA), the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) and the International Trail Running Association (ITRA), with support from World Athletics.
Building on the creation of a single definition for mountain and trail running within the athletics family, it replaces the successful separate World Championships held respectively by WMRA and IAU/ITRA.
Therefore, based on a unique definition for mountain and trail running within the athletics family, it replaces the successful World Championships held respectively by WMRA since 1985 and IAU since 2007.
As you can see, within the tradition of World Athletics, a biennial World Cup is currently planned. The year 2022 is reserved for the Continental Championships, such as the 2022 European Championships that is scheduled in El Paso, La Palma.
However, WMRA continues to manage in solitary the MOUNTAIN RUNNING WORLD CUP, which is until now the only official world circuit of World Athletics in this sport.
WMRA also run the WORLD MOUNTAIN RUNNING MASTERS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS and the WORLD MOUNTAIN RUNNING WORLD CUP U18.Those events did hold editions in the time from 2019 to 2022, albeit they also endured some cancellation.
However, since they were no international senior official competitions in 2020-2021, WMRA created back in NOV21 the WMRA NATIONS CUP whose starting video with the Spanish team we show now below.
World Mountain Trail Running Championships 2023: Four candidates. Looking forward to the second edition, the organizers from WMRA-IAU-WA confirm that that selection process has now been narrowed down to four final candidates.
