SUUNTO 5 PEAK REVIEW: LIGHTWEIGHT GPS WATCH (39GR) AND GREAT BATTERY

299€ / 43MM / 20H

Suunto 5 Peak is an evolution of the old Suunto 5. The new watch is 41% lighter than its predecessor, weighs only 39 grams so we are facing one of the lightest watches on the market.

The Finnish brand is going through difficult times after its double sale to China in four years: In 2018 the Amersports group was sold to a Chinese consortium, which in turn resold Suunto a few weeks ago this 2022 to another Chinese company. Therefore, all the more reason to look in detail at this Suunto 5 Peak that could be the swan song of a way to make gps watches.

SUUNTO FROM FINNLAND TO CHINA.

After a first sale of Suunto’s parent company, Amer Sports to a Chinese group in 2018, the second sale to China of the brand was made public on 10ENE. The new Asian Amer Sports sold Suunto to Liesheng, a Chinese technology company that focuses on the segment of smart and sports wearable electronic devices.

In this way, they have reached an agreement in a transaction whereby Amer Sports sells Suunto to Liesheng. The transaction was signed on 10ENE and is expected to close in the first half of 2022.

Founded in Guangdong, China in 2015, Liesheng is known internationally for developing the Consumer Electronics brand Haylou.

SUUNTO 5 PEAK: NEW GPS WATCH LIGHT AND AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE.

Made in Finland, the designers of Suunto have created this watch for active people, who want to explore new terrain and who are looking for a watch at a much more affordable price than other large GPS watches on the market, yes, who are willing to not have the most advanced functions.

The Suunto 5 Peak is just as elegant as its “brother” the Suunto 9 Peak, has a selection of easily interchangeable straps to combine styles and is designed to be used in our training sessions but also for our daily use.

SUUNTO 5 PEAK REVIEW: NAVIGATION FEATURE

The Suunto 5 Peak includes the Snap to Route option, which allows us to have stored in the watch a route that we want to make and that we can follow later, even if there is no good GPS reception.

We can synchronize our routes with platforms such as Training Peaks, Strava or Komoot, so we can then follow turn by turn (Komoot) with our Suunto 5 Peak, so it will be almost impossible to get lost.

Using the Suunto app on our smartphone, we can view heat and 3D maps to see popular routes in an area, plan our journeys and then pass them to the clock by synchronizing.

When it comes to navigation, Suunto 5 Peak lacks built-in maps.
