CIMALP X TRAIL: MULTIPURPOSE SHOES PERFECT FOR HIKING AND MOUNTAIN RACING
CIMALP X TRAIL: Multipurpose shoe perfect for hiking and mountain races. Our section TRAIL SHOES shows us today the Cimalp X-TRAIL. A new multipurpose shoe, from the French house, ideal for hiking and mountain races.
After the launch of the 864 2.0 and the 864 DROP CONTROL EVOLUTION, the French launched a shoe that we will be able to use in all kinds of situations. Hiking, mountain races and we will see if for even the most daring, ultra marathons. We begin with video-analysis by our colleague Abel de Frutos.
CIMALP X TRAIL:
MULTIPURPOSE SHOES PERFECT FOR HIKING AND MOUNTAIN RACING
Comfort, lightness, stability, traction and durability, as the Cimalp website cites, these are the 5 premises with which they launch these new Cimalp X-Trail. Shoes that combine lightness and dynamism for mountain runners and hikers looking for a shoe for everything.
Let’s go first with the technical sheet of the shoe.
CIMALP X-TRAIL: DATA SHEET

UPPER
On the cover we have R-MESH, 100% recycled polyester. A fabric that according to the brand will be very breathable, with heat-sealed and seamless reinforcements. You can see these reinforcements in the instep area, which will help us to give our race greater stability.
The toe is quite well protected and we have a reinforced heel to give greater stability. Flat laces and a classic tongue that seems to improve on that of the 864 DROP CONTROL Evolution.
MIDSOLEOne of the characteristics of these Cimalp X-TRAIL is its CHROMOSOME midsole, a midsole that it shares with its trail sisters, ultra-flexible (we’ll see how it shows wear and tear). With R-SPEED cushioning and R-FOAM technology to aid optimal shock absorption. With a 6mm drop it stays at a medium height.
Unlike their sisters, these X-Trail come with just one template. In principle you can put any of the other two templates of 4 and 8 mm if you have it. We will try it to see how they behave.
SOLEOn the sole we have a VIBRAM XST (XS Treck), a sole suitable for all types of terrain with good grip and durability. Multi-directional studs of different shapes, about 4mm. And torsion lines throughout the sole that eliminates stiffness to the shoe. At first glance it looks like a sole that will move well on not very technical terrain and where grip is not a “must”.
After the many kilometers that we have done to its sisters the 864, it will be necessary to see how that tip behaves, which in difficult terrain has suffered more than necessary with a lot of degradation.
CIMALP X-TRAIL: CONCLUSIONApparently we have a shoe that we can use “for everything.” Both for our mountain hiking outings (beware that it does not carry GTX, so if it rains or there is snow it will not be the best companion) as well as for outings and training. Cimalp comments that it is also suitable for ultras on its website, but seeing the result that the 864 drop control evolution gave us, I doubt that it is the best shoe for this type of racing.
We will test it thoroughly in trailrunningspain.com and we will tell you our impressions.
