RÉUNION, DIAGONALE DES FOUS 2021: ULTRA TRAIL 100 MILES| 9400M+
The Diagonale des Fous 2021 is one of those mythical mountain races from all over the world: For history, for landscapes, for its peculiar atmosphere.
It has a long history behind it (there are 29 editions) and offers great toughness, so much so that for some it is the most demanding 100-mile race in the world.
The Diagonal des Fous was born in 1989 with a route of just over 100 kilometers and has evolved since then to consolidate with a 100-mile route crossing reunion Island from south to north. In fact, the current name “La Diagonal de los Locos” is relatively recent since it was adopted in 2011.
The Diagonal des Fous 2021 will be 160km. It also has two shorter versions, 105km and 72km and a relay version of 173km. All of them form the Grand Raid of Reunion Island. Below you can see the registered for this 2021 edition in each race.
RÉUNION, FRANCE IN THE INDIAN OCEAN.
It is a test that is disputed in a distant French overseas area, since it is run on reunion Island. It is no less than 11 hours by flight from Paris.
Perhaps that’s why it’s a difficult race to fit into the “bucket list” of mountain runners here, with few visits in all these years. In return, as with its almost contemporary Marathon des Sables, its is an icon for the French.
It has become one of the most prestigious international ultra-remote events, although it has not been part of the Ultra-Trail World Tour (UTWT) since 2018. Kilian Jornet, with doubles in 2010 and 2012, Francois d’Haene, Andrea Huser were winners.
The KING of reunion Island, with a record of the test included, is Francois D’Haene with 4 victories and a time of 22h58min. Keep in mind that the record of the Ultra Trail of Mont Blanc, which he has himself, is 19h01min, almost 4 hours less.
Only those numbers already give us an idea of the hardness of the Diagonale des Fous! Another idea, you can do it with this panoramic view of the continuous ups and downs in the jungle that await us. As a reference, mortals are given, in 2021, 66 hours to finish against 30h in Leadville or 46 in Chamonix.
DIAGONALES DES FOUS: RACES AND TRACK
DIAGONALE DES FOUS 160 KM |9400M+
The Diagonal de Fous s is a very hard ultra unique in the world for its landscapes (the Natural Park of Réunion is a UNESCO Heritage Site).
It brings together the abrupt and brutal profile of the race, crossing the impressive “Circuses” of Cilaos and Mafate – this circus gives its name to one of the emblematic shoe models of the Hoka One One brand. It also weighs the prohibition of running with canes to protect that environment, and the extreme temperatures that will be experienced.
This 2021, due to a fire that occurred a few months ago, the race has been cut by 6 kms and the mythical climb to Maïdo that would arrive around km 100 will not be climbed, so it will be in 160km and 9400m. Below, detail layout Diagonale des Fous 2021.
The organization officially reduced it a few weeks ago for reasons of high risk in the area for runners.
