HOKA EVO JAWZ: THE HOKA SHOES DESIGNED FOR MUDDY CONDITIONS. Our TRAIL RUNNING SHOES section presents  the most unknown model perhaps of the brand catalogue. Born to fly over mud or other wet and soft terrain, it is a fast and grippy hyperlight shoe, for short and medium runs up the mountain.

Its 130o price, for 173 grams, plus a ground height of 20mm in front and 23mm behind, make it the cheapest, lightest and most agile mountain Hoka. In addition, Vibram Megagrip outsole fit and features 6mm heels. Let’s go with the details analyzed by Mayayo.

HOKA EVO JAWZ: THE HOKA’S DESIGNED FOR MUDDY CONDITIONS

HOKA ONE ONE 2021. A DIFFERENT DEISGN PHILOSOPHY.

Hoka’s philosophy has been different since it was born, as is the case with his rival Altra’s Natural Running. The Hoka One Ones were born as a maximalist shoe that cradled and cushioned the runners’ feet. Mermoud and Diard started prototyping themselves.
Later, they teamed up with a chemist at a Chinese footwear company to develop a completely new type of EVA foam that was soft and surprisingly light. It was a huge step forward: Now they could put a lot of mm. rubber under the foot, to amoritute more without being a ballast. To this day, that is perhaps the main hallmark of the brand, which only in the Profly cushioning of the Torrent 2 has come out of the mold.

The first releases were the Mafate (now Evo Mafate and Mafate Speed), Bondi and Stinson ATR. Success soon came and Hoka has expanded rapidly since.

The HOKA TRAIL 2021 range features seven different shoes: You can see them all here as they are portrayed today by the official website of the brand. Complete the series an eighth passenger, in this case limited edition of the iconic Speedgoat.

HOKA ONE ONE: THE DESIGN PILLARS.

As you can see in the image above, almost all Hoka shoes (the Torrent as an exception) share basic principles: More than 25mm. cushioning, Contained weights (264-333gr), medium drop (4-5mm), rocker chassis and oversized sole in width that stabilizes ground height and better distributes weight.

Light foam: Hoka remains true to its patented EVA rubber blend. They emphasize that it is more elastic, for better support and energy return. They also argue that it is more durable than traditional EVA. . The foam has received different names, including RMAT and R-Bound, but the underlying chemistry is essentially the same.

Rocker chassis: Translated into names like Meta-Rocker and the Active Foot Frame.

  • The Meta-Rocker is a combination of a low heel tip drop and a rounded sole shape that, according to the house, complements the natural stride and helps to propel forward.
  • The Active Foot Frame cradles the foot deeper into the shoe midsole, providing more support as you run. Hoka compares the design to sitting in a low bucket seat of a race car. And true, that peculiar adjustment made it narrow for many people to narrow their last years.

HOKA ONE ONE JAWZ. DATA SHEET.

Superlight and aggressive Hoka mud shoes? Well, yes, there are, too. Although, as with their sisters for firm ground, the HOKA TORRENT 2 are less faithful to the pillars of the brand’s usual design.

We start by reviewing their data sheet for you, so that we can take into account the numbers as a starting point that retracts them both in how different they are to their sisters, and in the type of use to which they are addressed. The shoes that are born from the mixture of aggressive traction with an elegant design. The HOKA ONE ONE Evo Jawz shoes are designed for maximum performance in technical and wet terrain.

  • Price: 130€. The most “accessible” Hoka together with Torrent 2, with a similar philosophy in addition.
  • Weight: 173 gr. (EU size 40.0) Spectacular, a whole flyer if you consider they have a lot of rubber sole.

HOKA EVO JAWZ: CONCLUSION.

The lightest Hoka mountain shoe, with great grip too. And a great unknown yet, perhaps in our country, about what it could bring to so many North Third corridors.

This Hoka stands out from Hoka for providing us with a powerful tack on its sole, with that Vibram Megagrip rubber plus the 6mm heels. Therefore, it defends itself perfectly in soft and humid terrain, but will fulfill worthy in stretches of rocky or similar edges. And because of its lightness and cushioning 20mm in front, it will not penalize both in the pister sections and other mud shoes that go “at ground level”

Given this, it will be perfect for LIGHT runners, with polished technique and a medium-low weight to use them in both in Vertical Kilometers, and in running short and medium distances, about 20/25 kilometers in muddy conditions. That terrain, so softly needs less cushioning in the shoe. It can also be an option for those who are obsessed with running weight and run with more stretches of soft ground than firm.

Special mention, of course, for Vibram MegaGrip sole. Rubber that has always fulfilled tasks with dignity, even if we have as a personal favorite some other compound. If we combine that rubber together with its aggressive 6 mm studs, then… Run quietly through the mud, the Hoka Evo Jawz will bite the terrain to run fast and confidently when you need it most.

We don’t want to finish without aiming that features a fine PROFLY midsole that creates a smoother cushioning on the heel and a firmer, propellant front. It is the newest and most advanced version of Hoka’s hyperlight foam saga, which shares with its sister the Torrent2, designed for somewhat firmer terrain.

The upper, to save weight is quite radical: An ultra-thin mesh, which also helps not to “suck” running water. As a global result, the EvoJawz shoe stays as light weight as possible while retaining a tight and locked fit to make its rapid descents.
