ASICS META SPEED SKY: RUNNING CARBON PLATE SHOES, 38MM OF CUSHIONING IN THE HEEL. Our RUNNING SHOES section celebrates the launch of the two ASICS METASPEED SKY and EDGE sisters. A couple of days ago it became official to launch of two “flying” running shoes, tuned according to their running style.

The Japanese brand claims through scientific studies running improvements of more than 1%, thanks to its innovative design focused to meet the needs of the runners.

Let’s go with the presentation of the Metaspeed project first and the details of Asics Metaspeed Sky later.

ASICS METASPEED: A NEW PROJECT, TWO SISTERS

The two new ASICS shoes, METASPEED Sky and METASPEED Edge, seek to make a difference within the new carbon plate runinng shoes models. To do this, the brand argues, they have been scientifically designed taking into account different running styles: those who prime stride amplitude (Stride) or who prime frequency (Cadence). The new racing shoes want to help elite athletes to reach the top and improve their performance.

According to the brand, it is sought so that it is no longer the athlete who adapts their running style, but ASICS offers these two models so that the shoe adapts to the style of the runner. How did they get here?

METASPEED: TWO SCIENTIFIC STUDIES

The design history of these two new sneakers focuses on a crucial idea from scientists at the ASICS Institute of Sports Sciences. During their research, they realized that the kind of footwear that propelled runners to be the fastest in the world, only favored one type of runner: STRIDE runners, that is, those who have a long run with large periods in suspension and who increase their speed by extending the length of their stride.

This ASICS research showed that these shoes are not fully compatible with elite athletes who prefer the second most important race style, CADENCE, which is characterized by giving smaller strides as it moves around the ground with minimal upward and downward movement. These runners increase their speed by increasing the length of their stride and increasing the number of steps they take per minute.

STUDY RUNNERS STRIDE VS. CADENCE

ISS sports scientists were able to see that athletes perform more when running with sneakers optimized for their running style. Addressing the challenge, ASICS decides to create metaspeed™ Sky models for STRIDE and METASPEED Edge racers for those with a CADENCE style – both specially optimized and tested to improve runner performance for each of them named race styles(1).

This data has been based on research conducted by the ASICS Institute of Sport Science in January 2021 that showed that STRIDE runners perform more with METASPEED™ Sky and CADENCE with METASPEED™ Edge.

The launch of the METASPEED™ Sky and METASPEED™ Edge models means runners no longer have to adjust their running style to fit the shoe they wear. Initial ASICS tests have already shown that METASPEED’s innovation™ could help reduce the number of steps a runner to finish a marathon by more than 1.2% (2), which will give all elite athletes the opportunity to achieve their maximum performance.

This data was based on research conducted by the ASICS Institute of Sport Science in January 2021. The calculation is based on the average steps taken by STRIDE riders when wearing the METASPEED™ Sky shoe during the course of a marathon compared to ASICS’ previous high-end racing shoe, METARACER.

ASICS METASPEED SKY

The METASPEED Sky shoe is designed to help runners go faster by significantly expanding the length of their stride. STRIDE runners take a longer stride once they start to increase their speed. Thanks to an energetic FF Blast TurboTM midsole foam and a propellant carbon plate, runners wearing these shoes will be able to save more energy while maintaining a steady pace during the final stages of the race.

Pronated and tested: The METASPEED design has been developed and tested with some of the best athletes in the world. Sara Hall tested a first prototype at the 2020 London Marathon and set a personal mark of 2h22m1s by improving her previous personal mark in 15 seconds. In early March 2021, athletes Julien Wanders, Sondre Nordstad Moen and Mario Mola who have recently joined the ASICS team and will race with METASPEED Sky.

ASICS METASPEED SKY: CONCLUSION.

Asics expands its commitment to carbon plated sneakers, launched this duo. In the case of this METASPEED SKY ASICS, they are designed to help you run faster by extending your stride length. It’s true that it makes sense: Runners who base their style on the stride give a longer stride once they start to increase their speed, but their cadence remains mainly constant.

Thanks to the dynamic foam of the midsole and the carbon fiber propulsion plate, runners wearing these shoes will be able to conserve more energy while keeping pace in the later stages of the race. METASPEED SKY ASICS have been released last March 31, 2021.
