SKY GRAN CANARIA: BREAKING 7
The Sky Gran Canaria, one of the most important and exciting ultra mountain races on the islands, returns in a very special format. On this occasion, and given the current health circumstances, the event reinvents itself to become one of the biggest sporting challenges of the moment, the Breaking 7 Gran Canaria.
Jordi Gamito, one of the best ultratrail runners in the world and current recordman of the ULTRASKY AM72 distance from the Be Cordial Beyond The Coast Sky Tour Gran Canaria, will try to break his own record set at 7:25’41”. Today November 7th at 7AM of the Canary Islands (8AM Peninsula) will start in the municipality of Agaete and try to get off from 7 hours traveling seventy-two kilometers to the finish line, on Playa de Mogán. Here’s the path he is facing.

But the Catalan runner is not alone in this demanding challenge, next to him will run a selection of the best mountain runners of the islands headed by Yeray Durán, Aday Santana, Iván Quintana, Octavio León, Jeho Medina, Aday García, Ancor Ruiz and Rito Miguel Pérez. These brave ones will be divided among the 72 kilometers into four sections to cover them in groups of between 2 and 3 runners, accompanying Jordi Gamito in his challenges.
For Jordi Gamito “it is an honor to do something for our sport”, because in a situation like the current one “you don’t have to stop. Last year I gave one hundred percent and this year I want to overcome it, giving life to this island that appreciates me so much.” About the Canary runners ensures that “without them it would not be possible, to beat a record is difficult and they will motivate me in the needed way for such a challenge”
SKYGRANCANARIA VIRTUAL: MINISKY SM16, TRAILSKY TM36 Y ULTRASKY AM72.
Move RUN, as organizer of Sky Gran Canaria, will provide its organizational and logistical support to Jordi Gamito, who faces his own challenge individually. But they also offer all runners the possibility to be part of this year’s edition with a virtual version of the race. Participants have from 17th October to 8th December to race one of the three distances, MiniSky SM16, TrailSky TM36 and UltraSky AM72.
The Gran Canaria runners will take the planned route for the competition, according to the tracks of each distance that are available on the website http://www.skygrancanaria.net. Runners from outside Gran Canaria will be able to take a tour of the same distance and with a similar positive altitude gain as original track, according to the official race profile chart.
Participants will take the tour individually and in self-sufficiency, with the recommendation not to do the tour alone and that they are in possession of the current insurance that covers them in case of any incident.
The top 20 qualifiers in each of the official distances, MiniSky SM16, TrailSky TM36 and UltraSky AM72, will earn trophies, without gender discrimination. The Virtual Race offers a total of twelve distances in Training mode, and you can repeat as many times as you want. Distances and times will be controlled through an app.
Orlando Montesdeoca, race director, said today that they have created the virtual version of the race to maintain “the illusion of Canary runners to continue competing. We are confident that by 2021 the event will be able to return with all security guarantees.” Montesdeoca also added that “2020 is being a very hard year, but that is not why we must stop doing things. We found it an attractive madness that Gamito wanted to break his own record and we are very pleased that both institutions and sponsors and The Canary Runners have supported the event.”
GRAN CANARIA, SAFE DESTINATION.
The Breaking 7 Gran Canaria challenge will travel the island from north to south through up to six different municipalities, Mogán, Agaete, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Artenara, Tejeda and San Mateo. 72 kilometers of landscape beauty, dream trails, technical difficulty and sporting challenge that will be broadcast via streaming through the Facebook channel of Sky Gran Canaria, thus offering the world the opportunity to enjoy the incredible places of Gran Canaria island for seven hours and uninterrupted.
The event thus becomes a tourist attraction, a window to the outside to show Gran Canaria not only as a destination of natural beauty and active sport, but also as a safe place and with all the necessary health requirements for the development of races of this level in the middle of the global pandemic caused by the covid-19.
The Breaking 7 challenge and the Be Cordial Beyond The Coast Sky Tour Gran Canaria Virtual Race are made possible by the Tourism Board of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the City Council of Mogán, the City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana and the City Council of Agaete, together with the sponsorship of Be Cordial Hotels and Resorts and Coca Cola.
