WOMEN’S RACE

In the women’s race, Spain’s Júlia Font (Brooks Running) claimed a dramatic victory. Germany’s Daniela Oemus (Nike Running) had led the race from the start, but Font made an extraordinary comeback in the final kilometer, overtaking Oemus just minutes before the finish line. Font secured her first win of the season with a time of 3h45’39”, edging out Oemus by only seven seconds. Local Basque runner, Onditz Iturbe (Domusa), rounded out the women’s podium.

Font was ecstatic, saying, “Finally, my first win of the circuit. I have been chasing this all year and it has finally arrived. The last kilometer with Daniela was crazy! When I saw her, I couldn’t believe that I could have a chance to win and I gave everything I had. This race is incredible and I invite everyone to come because it’s really crazy.”

MEN’S RACE

In the men’s race, Italy’s Luca Del Pero (Scarpa) took his first win of the Merrell Skyrunner® World Series. Del Pero ran a consistent race, staying with the leaders before pushing ahead in the final stretch to claim victory with a time of 3h00’25”. He finished just over a minute ahead of Spain’s Manuel Merillas (New Balance), with Italian under-23 runner Lorenzo Rota (Scarpa) taking third.

Del Pero, after two podium finishes earlier this season, expressed his joy: “Victory has finally come. It is my first win of the Merrell Skyrunner® World Series. After the podiums in Calamorro Skyrace and Peru, finally the winner’s bib is mine. The level was very high today. With Merillas and Antonio Martinez it’s never easy to win. The weather was perfect for me, I really like the mud and I enjoyed it from the beginning to the end..”

Mud, Mountains, and Passion in the Basque Country

Race director Jurek Ziemkiewicz called the event “spectacular,””It was a spectacular race, with changeable weather and a lot of mud on the course, quite a spectacle with an exciting finish”. He also highlighted the “great atmosphere in Zeanuri and with a very big party.”.

Seana Forbes, a representative of the Merrell Skyrunner® World Series, echoed the sentiment: “Gorbeia Suzien never disappoints! This year’s edition was incredible with a passionate crowd, tough conditions and a fierce fight. Luca Del Pero deserved his win and the fight between Julia and Daniela just minutes before the finish had everyone on their feet watching the live! Conditions were very muddy on the course but this is all part of the Basque charm and this is makes the race special. Thanks to the people of Zeanuri for their spirit and we look forward to coming back time and time again.”

COURSE OVERVIEW

The race left today, Saturday at 9:00 from the Plaza de Zeanuri and at the hermitage of San Justo they entered the Parque Natural de Gorbeia. The first part of the race is made up of steep slopes, after which we reach Zanburu where the peloton took the straightest and fastest path to the vicinity of Monte Lekanda.

Before reaching the rocky summit of Lekanda they marched towards the green meadows of Arraba. After crossing the fields and its crest, they reached the Zastegi area, from where they will begin the climb to the mountain that gives its name to the race, to the top of Gorbea.

Afterwards, they went down to the Acero area, with the last steep climb to Monte Aldamin. To finish, a long descent until reaching the finish line in the town of parque natural de Gorbeia, Zeanuri, after having faced some hills along the way.

Palms were sweaty around the world today as thousands tuned in to watch the live broadcast of the tenth edition of Gorbeia Suzien. The elite field was stacked with big names trying to score points towards the overall ranking at the final premier race before the SkyMasters, resulting in a thrilling race unfolding in Zeanuri, in the heart of the Basque Country, Spain.
