EIGER ULTRA TRAIL BY UTMB 2024

RESULTS.

The Eiger North Face was finally conquered in 1938 by Anderl Heckmair, Fritz Kasparek, Ludwig Vörg and Heinrich Harrer, in a battle waged over 4 days. Today, world-class climbers tackle the Eiger North Face solo in less than two and a half hours. Eiger Ultra Trail was launched in 2013.

Eiger limestone is infamous in mountain climbing circles. All our stone medals are collected from the mountain and hand-prepared by a local mountain guide. Each medal represents the mythos of the Eiger and serves to remind each recipient of this unique race at the foot of the Eiger, which we hope will inspire them further along their trail journey. We have the honour of awarding all finishers of the distances E250, E101, E51, E35, E16 and Trail Surprise with the Eiger limestone.

EIGER ULTRA TRAIL E101

Women ‘s race

Eva Maria Sperger seemed to be the secure winner for a long time but had to relinquish her first-place position in the final kilometers. Hannah Allgood of the U.S. surged ahead just four kilometers from the finish line to claim victory with a time of 13:09. Sperger, from Germany, held on to take second place, finishing in 13:36, while Spain’s Sandra Sevillano secured third place in 14:45. Despite leading for much of the race, Sperger encountered difficulties in the later stages, allowing Allgood to overtake her and win.

Eva Maria Sperger, second in the race: “Up towards the Eiger Glacier, the race got really tough. I knew that from 2018 and knew that the long, rewarding downhill would come, which ultimately saved me. And suddenly, almost at the bottom, I ran into a wall. The heat, the altitude and the fast downhill took their toll, stomach pains and no way to mobilize any more energy. I knew that at the speed I was going, my 15-minute lead would not be enough. And so it was, 5 km from the end, Hannah overtook me again and I had no chance of keeping up.

Men’s race

Only the top three men finished the grueling 100-kilometer race in under 12 hours, and they were significantly spaced apart. Andreas Reiterer of Italy claimed first place with a time of 11:05. Swiss runners Ramon Manetsch and Aleix Toda secured second and third places with times of 11:17 and 11:52, respectively. For Reiterer, this victory marks at least his seventh ultramarathon of the year.

Ramon Manetsch (SUI – E101 – Ultra Trail – 100K – second place male):
“Grindelwald is one of the most beautiful place in the world. I grew up not for away from here in the region of Thoune so I know this area very well and it was beautiful.”

EIGER ULTRA TRAIL E51

Women ‘s race

Americans took the top spots in the challenging 32-mile race featuring a grueling 10,170 feet of climbing. Sophia Laukli, an American living in Norway, secured a narrow victory in the women’s race, finishing in 5:51. Holly Page from the U.K. followed closely in 5:56, and Germany’s Kim Schreiber rounded out the top three with a time of 6:01.

Sophia Laukli (USA – E51 Panorama Trail – 50K – first place female):
“It was so so cool. I was happy that we were running slow enough and we can take some times to look at the mountains. It was still super hot, but it made it easier to be able to be in this place for sure!”

Men’s race

In the men’s race, Jeshurun Small from the U.S. managed to finish just under the five-hour mark, claiming victory with a time of 4:59:43. Paul Mathou of France took second place with a time of 5:07, while Norway’s Sindre Buraas finished third in 5:12.

Joshurun Small (USA – E51 Panorama Trail – 50K – first place male):
“The race was tough. There were a lot of mixed emotions, a lot of mixed terrain, but it was great. A lot of beautiful views. It was a very diverse course. A lot of runnable parts and a lot of technical ones too. It had everything. It was an amazing race.”
