KAI70k GOLD Andreu Simon and Yuri Yoshizum

At the start of the men’s race, three runners surged ahead: Andreu Simon, Goshi Osada from Japan, and Xingjing Li from China. While Simon temporarily fell back, he clawed his way back into first place during the challenging mountain terrain in the race’s second half. He steadily increased his lead over the other runners and crossed the finish line at Fujisan-no-Meisui Stadium in an impressive 7 hours, 7 minutes, and 34 seconds. The fight for second place was fierce until the very end, with Xingjing Li edging out Osada for the runner-up spot.

Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, Simon’s dedication to trail running was fueled by a doctor’s advice to find passion in life. His triumph is a testament to perseverance and the transformative power of sport.

In the women’s race, Stephanie Howe from the United States led the pack for the first half, but local favorite Yuri Yoshizumi took over as they entered the mountainous section around the 25.3 kilometer. Yoshizumi extended her lead throughout the climb and dominated the race, winning in a time of 8 hours, 7 minutes, and 44 seconds. Emi Iwai of Japan came in second at 8 hours, 26 minutes, and 14 seconds, while Honoka Akiyama, also from Japan, secured third place at 8 hours, 35 minutes, and 32 seconds.

Men’s winner Andreu Simon was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and this led him to start trail running, to find something to devote himself to in life. “Running around Mt. Fuji with fellow runners during the night was an enjoyable experience. I want to come back to my beloved Japan to run the 100-mile race next time”, he said.

Men’s second-place finisher Goshi Osada commented, “I tried to keep up when Andreu suddenly increased his pace from Yamanakako Kirara, but I didn’t have enough strength. It was a tense race and a good experience.”

Women’s winner Yuri Yoshizumi moved to Fujiyoshida six years ago in search of a better environment for trail running. “Even on familiar trails, running at night brings new discoveries and an extraordinary experience. The cheers from people along the course gave me strength”, she reflected on the race.
