GOLDEN TRAIL WORLD SERIES 2024 (27 APR):

NOW WE TRAVEL TO CHINA

After the start in Japan, the Golden Trail World Series (GTWS) 2024 wastes no time as athletes gear up for the next challenge in China. The second race, the Four Sisters Mountain Trail, is going to be an adrenaline-fueled experience amidst breathtaking landscapes. Set against the backdrop of the majestic Four Sisters Mountains, the race spans 22 kilometers with a elevation gain of over 1,500 meters. Athletes will traverse sections soaring over 4,000 meters above sea level, offering vistas that defy description.

After their impressive victories in Japan, all eyes are on Maude Mathys and Patrick Kipngeno as they aim to maintain their winning streak. Can they replicate their stellar performance on the rugged trails of China?

Located in west part of Sichuan, Four Sisters Mountain Trail owns not only high altitude and elevation, but also world-class mountain landscape resources. Snow mountains, forests, meadows and streams are naturally combined in Four Girls Mountain area. Runners will also experience traditional minority culture during their whole race trip

Fresh off her triumphant win in Japan, Maude Mathys (CHE – Asics) has demonstrated her remarkable resilience by claiming victory despite facing physical challenges during her preparation. However, Mathys faces stiff competition from Joyce Njeru (KEN – Atletica Saluzzo), who showcased her dominance throughout the race in Japan. With a course in China that may better suit her strengths, Njeru poses a significant threat to Mathys’s reign.

Sara Alonso (ESP – Asics) showcased a commendable performance in Japan, securing the second position. Eager to replicate her success, Alonso aims to maintain her momentum in the upcoming race. Local favorite Miao Yao (CHN – Salomon) seeks to shine on her home turf. Meanwhile, Malen Osa (ESP – Salomon) is poised to excel in conditions that are comparatively less extreme. The competition remains fierce with contenders like Grayson Murphy (USA – Saucony), Sunmaya Budha (NPL – Kailas Fuga), Marta Martinez Abellan (ESP – La Sportiva), Julia Font (ESP – Brooks) and Sylvia Nordskar (SWE – Hoka).

Following his stellar performance last week, Patrick Kipngeno (KEN – Run2gether ON AG)  is determined to replicate his success at the upcoming race in China, just like Maude Mathys. While the course in China may be less technical, Elhousine Elazzaoui (MAR – Nnormal) is expected to showcase his speed on the relatively less technical terrain. However, concerns linger about his recovery from a fall during the race in Japan. Philemon Kiriago (KEN – Run2gether ON AG)  faced disappointment in Japan after twisting his ankle and being forced to withdraw. Now fully recovered, Kiriago is raring to go for this weekend’s race

Joey Hadorn (CHE – Salomon) surprised everyone in Japan by leading for a significant portion of the race before ultimately conceding the victory to Patrick Kipngeno. Despite finishing second, Hadorn is determined to assert his prowess and vie for the top spot in China. Daniel Pattis (ITA – Brooks) finished 5th in Japan and will want to keep his spot in the top 5. Nonetheless, watch out for the likes of Roberto Delorenzi (CHE – Brooks), Alex Garcia (ESP – Brooks), Miquel Corbera (ESP – Brooks), Ruy Ueda (JAP – Team Ruy) and Huohua Zhang (CHN – Salomon).
