favorite men

With the upcoming Marathon de Paris, all eyes are on the runners from Kenya and Ethiopia, who have dominated the event in recent years. The last three winners leading the pack promise an intense battle in the men’s race.

Over the past two decades, Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes have clinched victory in 19 out of the last 20 editions, with Kenya boasting 11 wins and Ethiopia following closely with 8.

Gisealew Ayana, the 21-year-old Ethiopian who secured victory last year with a remarkable time of 2 hours, 7 minutes, and 15 seconds, aims for a double that only Britain’s Steve Brace (1989 and 1990) and, more recently, Kenya’s Paul Lonyangata (2017 and 2018) have achieved. Ayana faces tough competition from a field of contenders, including seven runners with impressive times under 2 hours and 5 minutes.

Among the contenders is veteran Kenyan Elisha Rotich, who returns to the marathon scene after a two-year absence. Rotich, is the winner of the 2021 Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris and holder of the event record with a time of 2 hours, 4 minutes, and 21 seconds. He is joined by fellow Kenyans Hilary Kipsambu, Brimin Kipkorir, and Titus Kipruto, all boasting formidable personal best times.

Ethiopia’s presence in the race is equally strong, with runners such as Mekuant Ayenew(2h04m46s in Seville, in 2020), Deso Gelmisa winner on the streets of Paris in 2022 and last year in Tokyo (record of 2h04m53s, in Valencia, in 2020), and Bazezew Asmare (2h04m57s in Amsterdam, in 2022). With seven other runners under 2h07m, the leading pack will likely be very dense.

Japanese athlete Yuki Kawauchi, aims to challenge the African dominance with his impressive personal best time of 2 hours, 7 minutes, and 7 seconds.

Representing France, Freddy Guimard enters the race with the best entry time among French runners, having clocked 2 hours, 13 minutes, and 56 seconds in Valencia last December.

favorite women

This year the women starts on the same line as the men and no longer on their own as in previous years, with an early start, the leading women will benefit from favourable conditions to set good times. Kenya and Ethiopia, who have shared all the victories over the last 15 editions (7 for Ethiopia, 8 for Kenya), should continue their duel.

Among the contenders, Kenya’s Vivian Cheruiyot is favorite. Winner of the 2018 London Marathon in 2h18M31S (personal best), Olympic champion in the 5,000m in Rio (2016), 2015 world champion and 2016 Olympic silver medal winner in the 10,000m and runner-up in the 2018 New York Marathon. Despite being 39 years old and with her last completed marathon dating back to 2019, Cheruiyot remains a top contender, albeit facing stiff competition from her rivals.

The Ethiopian delegation presents a formidable lineup, including Buzunesh Getachew, winner in Frankfurt last October in 2h19m27s (personal best), Rahma Tusa (2h19m33s), Etagena Woldu (2h20m03s), Hailu Haven (2h20m19s) and Gelete Burka (2h20m45s), winner of the 2019 Schneider Electric Marathon in Paris.

Mestawut Fikir and Enatnesh Tirusew, both showcasing impressive performances in the half-marathon circuit in 2023, are poised to make their marathon debut and could spring surprises on race day.

HIGH-LEVEL HANDISPORT RACE

The international handisport race will also be highly competitive. In the men’s wheelchair race, the Netherlands’ Gert Schipper, second last year behind Great Britain’s David Weir, France’s Julien Casoli (3rd last year and winner on five occasions since 2012), Colombia’s Francisco Sanclemente (3rd in 2022) and Spain’s Joaquin Garcia Diaz are all expected to lead the field.

For the fourth year running, the Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris, organised in accordance with World Para Athletics (WPA) rules, is the support event for the French Handisport Marathon Championships. Four French Champion titles will be awarded: men and women wheelchair athletes; men and women standing athletes. In the women’s wheelchair race, Nadège Monchalin (French champion in the 2023 half marathon) will be the favourite.
