UTMB 2021: A MAGIC RACE, A GREAT EDITION
D’Haene & Dauwalter, kings of Mont Blanc.
François D’Haene took off as the starting favorite for the first ever fourth wine on men´s UTMB. It took him 20.45 this year. It was nowhere easy at all, yet he succeeded. D´Haene is the first man ever to win 4 UTMB crowns: He did so in 2012, 2014, 2017 and now in 2021.
Starting among the favorites, he took the lead out at night and went on to fly out as head of the race. First with the American Jim Walmsley, then on alone as he dropped his partner after passing the halfway mark at Courmayeur. (80k)
With 170km and 10,000 meters vertical climb, the race took, as usual, a very heavy toll on many of the favorites: Francesca Canepa, Jim Walmsley, Jordi Gamito, Pablo Villa, and many other podium veterans from Mont Blanc races quit long before reaching the magic arch at the Alps.
No runner ever passed François D’Haene once he took the lead, yet on the final descent, Aurelien Dunand-Pallaz came as close as 7min behind the champ, who was never able to relax and enjoy an easy win this year.
On the other hand, after winning Hard Rock 100 with a new record, blasting that of Kilian Jornet back in JUly, today he set out to conquer a fourth historic victory and that he did. What a unique season for him…
Incredible how French runners have dominated UTMB 2021. No less than 6 frenchies in the Top 10 of the race.
The fourth first winners are french with François D’Haene (FR), Aurélien Dunand Pallaz (FR) and Mathieu Blanchard (FR), a 100% French podium for the first time in UTMB history.
American Courtney Dauwalter double winner
Among women, the American Courtney Dauwalter doubled up today on her 2019 victory. It seems as if it were easy for her to achieve an extraordinary race on 22h30,54. She pushed back her own record by 2 hours (¡!) and in the proceess arrived on a 7 position overall. What a performance!
When asked for her secret today, Dauwalter pointed out two factors. The first being new nutritional strategy for the last third of the race where she now has switched to non-solid food. Also, she has systematically resorted to music when the pain threatened to slow her down.
Just her USA females winne predecesors Krissy Moehl and Rory Bosio, Courtney Dauwalter one more confirms that American women prevail in the World Top of the Trail with 6 victories in their total count so far.
Camillas Bruyas finished second with a very good stopwatch of 24h09,42.. The Swedish Mimi Kotra has fighted and finished on 25h08,29.
