SENTIERO ITALIA: THE LONGEST MOUNTAIN ROUTE IN THE WORLD. (7,000K/D+350,000M). GUIDE BY VA’SENTIERO

SENTIERO ITALIA: THE LONGEST MOUNTAIN ROUTE IN THE WORLD. (7,000K/D+350,000M).GUIDE BY VA’SENTIERO. The monumental project, which crosses all Italy, from the Alps to Sicily and beyond. It was launched in 1995 by the Italian Alpine Club. Even if the physical marking/signing is still in development, it receives a new boost from the Va’Sentiero team that has published a free online guide. A great idea to go back to the mountains in a big way.

SENTIERO ITALIA: THE LONGEST MOUNTAIN ROUTE IN THE WORLD. (7,000K/D+350,000M). GUIDE BY VA’SENTIERO

Sentiero Italia is a hiking itinerary about 6,166 km long. which, in 368 stages, runs throughout the national territory. It departs from the Giant Grotta in Sgonico near Trieste and, crossing the entire alpine arch, the entire Apennine chain, Sicily and Sardinia, reaches Santa Teresa di Gallura (OT).

SENTIERO ITALIA: A LOGICAL TRACK.

Created by the Italian Alpine Club, after almost twelve years of preparations it was finally officially launched in 1995. That’s why it’s carefully thought out. Use long stretches of pre-existing itineraries such as:

  • the Great Alps Crossing (Piedmont)
  • Alta Via dei Monti Liguri (Liguria)
  • the Great Excursion of the Apennines (Tuscany)

Its construction, still partially unfinished, is relatively recent. The original idea was born in 1983 by a group of hikers gathered in an association of the same name and, with the collaboration of the CAI, saw the light in 1995 as part of the first edition of CamminaItalia, when a group of hikers left the City of Sardinia and made the entire journey over the course of eight months. The performance was repeated in 1999, this time with the collaboration of the National Alpine Association. In recent times, the evolution of the project has slowed considerably.

Even if the signals have been standardized, with a red-white-red sign with the S.I. inscription in black, many stages have been left alone as a mark on the map.

With the motto Walk, Discover and Share, a group of young friends began in 2019 the longest path in the world, with the project of sharing and valued the environmental, cultural and social heritage of the Highlands of Italy.

Exploring from landscapes to local gastronomy, to dialects and local history, they have been collecting and filming the entire tour to create a multimedia guide already available in www.vasentiero.org. Ferrino has accompanied them throughout the tour, supporting their philosophy of local and responsible tourism that bets to make known not only the cultural and artistic facet of the country but above all landscape, enhancing activities such as hiking and nature tourism.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE SENTIERO.

Completing the Way of St. James is a unique experience that requires time, effort and dedication: walking the several hundred kilometers of the mythical route can take weeks, months or even years. And now imagine a path eight times greater: seven thousand kilometers of travel, 350,000 meters of positive elevation, more than 300 stages and the Italic peninsula plus its islands to end to. This is sentiero Italia, the longest hiking route in the world, which joins the entire Italian territory from north to south crossing its spine. And now, for the first time, it has a free digital guide.

The new guide not only includes maps, tracks and detailed descriptions of the entire tour, but also contains endless images, videos, historical curiosities, local legends, gastronomic recommendations and popular traditions. All the points of the guide have been created according to the direct experience of the members of Va’ Sentiero, who, day after day, have documented the tour from all points of view.

Va’ Sentiero’s team is made up of six young people who, united by the love of the mountains of their country, began a social initiative and a deep exploration of their environment that has resulted in the most complete guide ever made about the Sentiero. The project is still underway, as the Covid-19 pandemic interrupted its exploration in March 2020 when 14 of the 20 regions had already traveled, and currently hope to be able to resume the journey this spring to end in October 2021.
