WORLD ATHLETICS CONTINENTAL TOUR
&
MOUNTAIN RUNNING-TRAIL 2021

The World Athletics Council approved also for this 2021 the extension of the Continental Tour calendar for 2021, which includes 85 Gold, Silver and Bronze meetings. Moreover, as you might remenber from our previous information, the First Edition of the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships (WMTRC) will be held 11-14 November 2021, in Chiang Mai, Thailand with the support of the World Athletics.

CONTINENTAL TOUR 2021

Overcomiong the pandemic situation, 29 Continental Tour meetings were held last year, including seven Gold meetings (of the 10 that were originally scheduled). For this 2021, the calendar includes 15 Gold meetings, with two in Africa following the addition of a second meeting to join Nairobi, and three Gold meetings to be held in the United States.

SEBASTIAN COE: WORLD ATHLETICS PRESIDENT

Sebastian Coe greet the meeting directors and thanks them for their commitment together with the member Federations around the 6 continents:

“We wouldn’t have chosen to launch a new global athletics tour on the eve of a pandemic, but the Continental Tour proved to be such a strong concept that it thrived even in these adverse circumstances,’’ he said.

“The tour has expanded substantially in 2021, and we’re delighted that it has been embraced so enthusiastically across the world. I’m particularly pleased to see that the US has stepped up to stage three Gold meetings as well as at least nine other Silver and Bronze meetings. These will provide new and vital competition opportunities and prize money for athletes and strengthen our sport both in the USA and internationally. We see the expanded US calendar as an early legacy of the decision to take our flagship event, the World Athletics Championships, to Oregon in 2022.

“We will continue to drive innovation and boost the competition opportunities available to our athletes around the world, with our immediate focus on the World Athletics Relays Silesia 2021, to be held in Poland in just six weeks’ time.”

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS MOUNTAIN RUNNING & TRAIL 2021

The First Edition of the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships (WMTRC) will be held 11-14 November 2021, in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Over the four days, the action-packed championships program will include vertical uphill mountain races, short and long trail races for senior athletes and the classic mountain races for both seniors and juniors.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS MOUNTAIN RUNNING

After the public process of candidacies opened more than a year ago, which attracted a first interest from almost 50 possible venues, Thailand’s proposal was the only one that stood firm until the end Therefore, the verification from World Athletics has focused more in ensuring the technical and logistical capacity of the local organizing committee, since it did not have any direct final rival.

Situated 700km north of Bangkok, on the banks of the Ping River, Chiang Mai offers unforgettable scenery of the most beautiful and the largest tourist spot in the northern part of Thailand. The mountainous surroundings and the city’s growing reputation for outdoors mass sporting events make it the perfect place to host the first-ever combined World Championships.

UNIFICATION WMRA – IAU – ITRA.

This new biennial event further develops the partnership between the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA), the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) and the International Trail Running Association (ITRA), with support from World Athletics.

As you can see, within the tradition of World Athletics, a biennial World Cup is currently planned. The year 2022 is reserved for the Continental Championships, such as the 2022 European Championships that is scheduled in El Paso, La Palma.

Therefore, based on a single definition for mountain and trail running within the athletics family, it replaces the successful World Championships held respectively by WMRA since 1985 and IAU since 2007. However, WMRA will continue to manage in solitary the MOUNTAIN RUNNING WORLD CUP, which is until now the only official world circuit of Athletics in this sport.

Building on the creation of a single definition for mountain and trail running within the athletics family, it replaces the successful separate World Championships held respectively by WMRA and IAU/ITRA.
