MARATHON DES SABLES PERU, THE END: “BE IN THE MOMENT” BY GEDIMINAS GRINIUS
Marathon des Sables Peru is now over, with Rachid el Morabity and Nathalie Mauclair leading the pack from start to finish over its 250km. After previous notes on prerace report with favorites and race data, the bivouac zero experience, thoughts on the simple life, survival creativity, hunger an even thoughts of morphing into a snake, today our special correspondent Gediminas Grinius bids farewell to a uniqu experience.

“Be in the moment” by Gediminas Grinius.
.
Be in the moment. Each day 300 runners wake up in Peruvian desert, who terribly want to reach the finish line and each day I wake up trying to freeze the time. I am very reluctantly packing my stuff for the last #MDS stage, it is short 19km kilometres and my new discovered bedouin life will be over. Damn it! I want to stay here for little while and maybe forever prolonging intense feeling of deep affection to my new life – being explorer, being Columbus, being able to elevate discomfort and suffering to yet another horizons.
.
Sadly this time desert can’t be endless and my heart is crying with no power to scream as I am approaching the finish line. I am exhausted, but in pure nirvana. I am just human who failed to live the split of second longer by sacrificing own pride. However, I am not afraid trying it over and over again, even if I am not sure I will be able to handle it, since it is the only way to find my own limitations.
.
Stepping on millions years of history was awesome, flying on the sandy dunes was rad, but more importantly were the people who surrounded me – my each day shrinking cell, always ready medical crew, old friends from Arista & MDS team patiently navigating me through the heat-breathing desert. I am still so overwhelmed with crazy wilderness culture, stoned with traveling and running experience, dizzy from deep emotions and still trying absorb and relive it. Yet just the sweet blood from lovely sun kisses left on my lips, but when the storm in my mind will end, Peru will stay for long time in my heart!
.
Inhale, exhale, stop the time and be in the moment
