ULTRA SKYMARATHON MADEIRA 2017: RACE REPORT, RESULTS AND PHOTOS. Victory and course record for Jon Albon and Hillary Allen.

The 2017 racing calendar kicked off yesterday for the Ultras of the Skyrunner National Series, created and managed by the Ocisport company. Jon Albon and Hillary Allen have taken the victory and also set new records. The men’s podium also saw Aurelien Dunand-Pallaz and Dmitry Mityaev, as well as Ekaterina Mityaeva and Elisabet Bertrán at the women´s.

After the portuguese race, the series are to celebrate their next two dates on June 10 at Tenerife Blue and on September 23 at Ultra Pirineu. Let’s get on now with the race report, results and photos of today’s race.

ULTRA SKYRUNNER NATIONAL SERIES 2017: CALENDAR
MADEIRA, TENERIFE BLUE, ULTRAPIRINEU AND BUFF EPIC CHAMPIONSHIP

The Skyrunner National Series by Ocisport totals fifteen races for this 2017. They are divided into five Verticals, five Sky and three Ultra, plus the two National Sky Championships at Mabo and Ultra at Tenerife Blue. The Championship of Vertical is vacant.

As a preamble to the Portuguese race report, let us touch base first by reviewing the Ultra calendar that started this weekend at Madeira. In the ultra category, the main novelty is the inclusion of the Tenerife Blue Trail on June 10, which completes the category, together with this Ultra Skymarathon Madeira held on June 3 and Ultra Pirineu in September. The fourth ultra for SNS will be the Buff Epic Trail at Barruera on July 8, which after hosting the 2016 World Championship this year will be the national SNS championship.

ULTRA SKYMARATHON MADEIRA (55 / D + 4,000m)

Ultra SkyMarathon Madeira inaugurated the ISF Skyrunner National Series Spain, Andorra & Portugal 2017 Ultra Series. It did so in an exciting race with victory for Jon Albon and Hillary Allen, who lead the circuit after the first of three scheduled events

THE TRACK: The geographical location of Madeira and its steep orography attract the rain that configures its characteristic green color of exuberant vegetation, which along with a demanding trail of 55 kilometers with a positive gradient of 4,000 meters which blends up the beach start and finish with strenous ups and downs, thus combining the elements for a hard but colorful layout.

JON ALBON, MALE CHAMPION: Frenchman Aurélien Dunand-Pallaz went off fast and led the race for much of the Ultra SkyMarathon Madeira. At Pico Ruivo, the highest and most emblematic of the race, Dunand-Pallaz led a minute ahead of Jon Albon and Dmitry Mityaev. In the long descent to Calhau de Sao Jorge, Dunand-Pallaz has maintained the difference but by the approach to the final ascent he had already been surpassed by Jon Albon. The last climb took its toll and Albon escaped solo to the finish line, which he crossed with 5:45:36, thereby setting a new course record. Dunand-Pallaz managed to hold on to second place with ease and reached Santana finish line with 5:55:30, while the podium was completed Dmitry Mityaev with 6:07:23.

HILLARY ALLEN, FEMALE CHAMPION. In women, Hillary Allen’s dominance has been incontestable and has led the race from start to finish to leave the race record at 7:06:22, improving in almost 27 minutes the record set by Gemma Arenas in 2016. The fight for The podium was open but soon it has been seen that the second position was named after the Russian Ekaterina Mityaeva, who has not left the second place and has entered the goal with 7:34:33. From behind, Anna Frost appeared to complete the podium but finally the third place was for Elisabet Bertrán with a record of 8:35:11.

NEXT RACE, AT TENERIFE BLUE TRAIL: Following the Ultra SkyMarathon® Madeira, the Ultra Skyrunner National Series Spain, Andorra & Portugal’s lead is for the Norwegian Jon Albon and the North American Hillary Allen but everything can change in a week, since in seven days arrives The turn of the Tenerife Blue Trail. The season will be closed at Ultra Pirineu on September 23 and will also have the BUFF Epic Ultra Trail as Skyrunning National Ultra Championship.
