PIERRA MENTA 2017:
Winners Lenzi/Eydallin & Roux Forsberg.
.
Kilian Jornet, paired with Alexis Sévennec, took second place in the famous stage race in the Alps. The pair were consistent throughout the race’s four stages which was dominated by the Italians Damiano Lenzi and Matteo Eydallin, who took the gold.
The pair made up of Kilian Jornet and Alexis Sévennec have won the silver medal at the Pierra Menta, the famous stage race that has been held for the past four days in the French Alps. The pair finished behind the Italians Damiano Lenzi and Matteo Eydallin, who dominated over the four days, while Michele Boscacci and Nadir Maguet completed the podium.
The Pierra Menta is one of the most important mountain ski events. More than 210 teams took part over the four days in a competition that involves more than 10,000 metres of climbing. It begins and ends at Areches Beaufort and over the four days takes in the highest summits in the region. It is one of Jornet’s favourite events which he has won on four occasions (2008, 2010, 2011 and 2016).
On the first stage the skiers face a demanding course with a total ascent of 2,318 metres. Kilian Jornet and Alexis Sévennec came third as they were unable to match the pace set by the Italians Damiano Lenzi y Matteo Eydallin, who finished first, three and a half minutes ahead of Nadir Maguet and Michele Boscacci.
On the 2,213m ascent of the second stage, Lenzi and Eyadallin were once again the fastest, although on this occasion Jornet and Sévennec finished second, only 1m 13 seconds behind the winners, putting them in second position overall. It was a tough stage with five climbs. After reaching the 1,300m at Le Chornais, the racers still faced the summits of Bouchet (1,760m), Cuvy (1,700m), Les Arcrays (1,710m) and Les Bonnets Rouges (2,000m).
Lenzi and Eydallin began the third stage with an advantage of almost five minutes over Jornet and Sévennec, who finished fourth in a hard-fought race with Valentin Favre and Flippo Barazzuol and Nadir Maguet and Michele Boscacci in the battle for second and third. Over the stage’s overall ascent of 2,467m the Italians showed their consistency with an advantage of almost five minutes over their pursuers on another demanding day with four climbs to the summits of Passage du Dard (2,342m), Pointe du Dard (2,489m), Epaule de la Légette (2,124m) y Point de la Gde Combe (2,100m).
The fourth and possibly most epic stage was held this morning with the ascent of Grand Mont (2,686m), with a climb of 2,543m, where dozens of people had climbed to cheer on the racers. Jornet and Sévenec came third, behind the Italian duos of Lenzi-Eydallin and Maguet-Boscacci, who crossed the line together.
“The Italians (Lenzi and Eydallin) were very strong at the front but we were able to get a place on the podium. We’re really happy with the result,” said Jornet.
With this silver at Pierra Menta, Jornet ends several frenetic weeks of competition in which he has won gold in the vertical race, silver in the individual category and bronze in the World Championship relay race held in Alpago and Piancavallo.
.
Kilian Jornet says: “The Italians (Lenzi and Eydallin) were very strong at the front but we were able to get a place on the podium. We’re really happy with the result, because before we started I wasn’t sure if I was going to race. I was going to take part with Mathéo Jacquemod and at the last moment he said he couldn’t. In the end I did it with Alex Sévennec and we’re really happy. The Italians (Lenzi and Eydallin) were very strong at the front but we were able to get a place on the podium. We’re really happy with the result.”
