KINABALU CLIMBATHLON 2012: Race preview.

Favorites Kilian Jornet & Emelie Forsberg, plus challengers.

Besides Kilian Jornet who is a clear favorite given both his previous record as well as his current great state of form, the battle for second place will be between Tom Owens, currently ranked second and Luis Alberto Hernando, 2011 reigning world champ.  Unfortunately, Marco De Gasperi, past winner here will not be present this year due to injury.

The big action will be in the women’s field with no less than five out of the top eight ranked ladies racing.  The world title however is only within the reach of four women: Emelie Forsberg and Blanca Maria Serrano, ranked first and second, have points to discard while Italy’s new young star Silvia Serafini and Nuria Picas, recent winner at Cavalls del Vent, will ensure sparks fly.

KINABALU CLIMBATHLON 2012 NEW COURSE.

The Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon has represented a landmark skyrunning event since 2004, on many occasions representing the final, a World Series main race and, in 2011, the Skyrunner SuperCup. See here the downhill videos of top runners  -Jornet. De Gasperi, etc..- fighting out the title at Kinabalu 2011. Most impressive they are.

A major course change this year will mean the famous summit will not feature in the new race, which starts in Kinabalu Park at 1,563m, rises steeply to 2,760m in just eight kilometres, to descend to the small town of Kundasang on the other side of the mountain for a total distance of 23 km.
