Asics Trail race Series: Trail Donostia – Hondarribia (31k/d+1300m) sold out in 3 hours
Results for the I Donostia-Hondarrribia Trail 2011: 444 finishers.
This trail race was created last year by the acredited “Club Deportivo Fortuna” to mark its centennial year. The club is best known in Spain for its 20.000 finishers road race from Behobia to San Sebastian. A most classic 20k commonly referred to as “La Behobia”. In the wake of the trail running boom all over Spain in the last years, the club chose to celebrate its aniversary by launching a selective (500 bibs only) yet high profile mountain race
It took off strongly from the start, with over 444 finishers last year and keeps growing ever since. Its aim, obviously, to become over time a trail running national reference, much like its veteran road sister has been for decades already. Hence, for this 2012 it was joining the Asics Trail Series.
Unfortunately, the race is paying the price of success: As no more than 500 runners are allowed over the natural areas to be raced upon, all slots available sold out in a blaze of barely 3 hours yesterday. (Fees were 20-25€)
The race track is based upon a traditional trail recently recovered by local authorities and known as TALAIA BIDEA. As you see in the map, the race starts right at San Sebastian´s borough of Gros, and tackles on hill after hill. The event also includes a neutralised river crossing by boat, then ends up at a famous fortified town at the frontier: Hondarribia. A beatiful village to visit and enjoy, particulary its Old Quarter and its “tapas” (locally known as “pintxos”) atmosphere nowadays.
