Joshua Cheptegei: Olympic Gold and Record in Paris 2024. Our ATHLETICS section brings you the news of Joshua Cheptegei’s victory in the 10,000m distance, where he also set an Olympic record.
Joshua Cheptegei won his first Olympic 10,000m title, running 26:43.14 to triumph in one of the most competitive races in recent memory. This Olympic title adds to his three consecutive world titles in the same distance, cementing his status as one of the greatest long-distance runners.

Joshua Cheptegei:
Olympic Gold and Record in Paris 2024
The race, which will be remembered as one of the most impressive, saw the Ethiopian runners setting an early pace. Cheptegei, known for his strategic patience, waited until the last 500 meters to take the lead, controlling the race with majestic precision. As other runners challenged his position, the reigning Olympic 5000m champion held firm, driven by his desire to win his first Olympic title in the distance he has always described as “special.”
Historic Achievement
By winning this race, Cheptegei becomes the first athlete since Kenenisa Bekele to hold the world record, the Olympic crown, and the World Championship title concurrently.
Cheptegei’s Gratitude
After the race, Cheptegei expressed his gratitude: “I am so excited. It took a lot of courage. It’s really amazing, this one was still missing. Three times world champion, now I can add the Olympic title to this. This one is for my family. Success is not only for me but for my family, my coach, my management. The whole team around me. I couldn’t have done it without them.”
A Challenging Year
What makes his performance even more impressive is that it comes after perhaps the hardest year of Cheptegei’s career. After completing the Valencia marathon in December 2023, he had not achieved a victory in any distance. By winning this Olympic gold medal, Cheptegei redeems his Tokyo 2021 silver in the same distance and gives Uganda its fifth ever Olympic gold medal. This victory emphatically proves his long-held belief that Ugandan athletes can compete with the world’s best without leaving their homeland.
Cheptegei has trained for many years in his native Kapchorwa, where he has even built a training center to inspire the next generation of Ugandan athletes. There is no greater legacy than nights like this in the Stade de France, which inspire not only his country but also the world of athletics.
