This year, the race, which has consistently seen growing international participation, boasted representation from over 55 nationalities. France and Spain led the ranking of registered runners, with almost 41% and 38% respectively. Additionally, the number of French participants saw a significant increase since 2021, being nearly six times higher.

ULTRA 105K

Zachary Garner (U.S.), just 24 years old and already the Bear 100 Mile course record holder, made a significant mark internationally by triumphing over defending champion Ben Dhiman (U.S., residing in France), legendary François D’Haene (France), and high-altitude expert Daniel Jung (Italy).

Garner secured victory with a time of 13:17, while Dhiman followed closely with 13:25, both surpassing Dhiman’s previous course record of 13:36 set in 2023. This year’s course was slightly altered due to snow, cutting a short distance but removing 325 meters of high-altitude climbing.

Joaquin Lopez (Ecuador) claimed third place with a time of 13:34. François D’Haene finished fifth in 14:26, and Daniel Jung withdrew from the race after 85 kilometers (53 miles).

Reactions

Zachary Garner (USA – Ultra 105K – 100M – first place male): “I have trained a lot, I am back, and I will go to the CCC distance of the HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc again in September. I have been training a lot, not for this race in particular, but to be better someday… so this has brought me here. So far so good”

Ben Dhiman (USA – Ultra 105K – 100M – second place male): “It’s a brutal course, it’s beautiful, it’s a great experience but it’s dam hard. I am already thinking of coming back”

François D’Hane: “Obviously, you have to know how to be satisfied with this fifth place but above all I was hoping for other sensations. I had come to have fun and gain confidence from running in beautiful technical terrain. My compensatory pain in my back, hip and knees has continued to persist since Spring and is impacting my training and therefore my preparation somewhat.

Women’s Race

Katharina Hartmuth (Germany), the runner-up at the 2023 UTMB, dominated the women’s category, finishing in 15:28, far ahead of the competition. Although the course differed this year, her time was significantly faster than the 17:13 clocked by Esther Fellhofer (Austria) in the previous race.

Claudia Tremps (Spain) and Lucie Jamsin (France) finished in second and third place with times of 17:10 and 17:47, respectively.

The women’s race was won by Anna Tarassova in 6:16:01, followed by Judith Marín (7:46:12) and third place went to Alison Jehl with 8:02:30.
