MOZART 100 BY UTMB 2024 RACE REPORT: Come hell or high water Our UTMB WORLD SERIES section brings us the results of this exciting test that took place between 30MAY-2JUN at the Salzburg Alps under epic conditions of permanent rain, cold, wind and oceans of mud.

Although Pascall and Chamberlain took the win of an epic mozart 100, MOZART 100 BY UTMB also saw Spanish triumphs, with Nuria Gil winning the Mozart Marathon and Cristina Santurino taking first place in the Mozart Ultra 81k. while Maite Maiora secured a fourth-place finish in the 105k main event.

COME HELL OR HIGH WATER

The 2024 edition of the Mozart 100 by UTMB will be remembered for two significant reasons: its ever increasing popularity, with over 3,100 participants registered across its ix distances ranging from the suburban 9k to the main event with 105k, plus the relentless downpour that drenched runners throughout the weekend.

Starting from Thursday, heavy rains intensified and temperatures steadily dropped, leaving the race and the peloton at the mercy of the elements. The organizers had warned about the rainy and cold conditions but could not anticipate the immense amounts of mud left by the continuous rain on all the routes.

Despite these challenges, all the races were successfully completed with adjusted routes, although the main ultra was neutralized in its final kilometers for safety reasons.

RACE REPORT

Over 3,000 runners took part in the 12 edition of mozart 100, where the weather conditions held the centraol stage for this edition of the trailrunning event in Salzburg.

On yhe sunny side, however, this edition also set new popular record attracting more than 3.000 from more than 80 different nationalities participating on one of the sis distances races offers:

Mozart 100 – 105km
Mozart ultra – 81km
Mozart Marathon – 39km
Mozart Half Marathon- 31km
Mozart Light-21km
Mozart City Trail-9km

The extraordinary spirit of trail running

The event was totally conditioned by the rain that was the protagonist during the day and that, without giving a minute’s respite, meant not only that the runners were permanently wet but also generated a lot of mud on all the trails.

However, the solidness of this veteran organization came through, adjusting the routes and ensuring race logisitcs and markings to acomodate all runners. Therefore, the participants took it on stride with wild abandon, keeping a smile on their faces while falling once and again throught the mud, from the champions to the last runner.

A sound testimony to the beauty of Salzburgerland under any weather condition, as well as to this “crazy” sport where us ordinary people attempt and more often than not achieve extraorfinary thins. As a finisher of the Mozart Marathon 2024 I do bear witness to it.

Last but not least, let me bear testimony to the man in the arena as it felt heartwarming for a popular runner like me that upon reaching the line on the 486 position of the Marathjon under the downpour tue very RD himself, Josef was there as well, ready with a smile and a handshake to congratulate each and every one of us. Felt good…and i am in fact looking forward to come back once again in 2025
