COROS VERTIX 2S REVIEW: UP TO 118H BATTERY TOP GPS. Our  GPS WATCH section presents the new COROS VERTIX 2S, the brand’s new top of the range for mountain sports.

The COROS VERTIX 2S arrives with a price of €700 and these new features: Longer battery life, more GPS precision and better heart rate sensor. While the new unit arrives for testing, we start by remembering the COROS VERTIX 2.

This new version hits the market retaining all the strong points of the COROS VERTIX 2, while adding some well-chosen improvements. If the GPS watch was already powerful on its own, efforts have been made to enhance heart rate monitoring, GPS accuracy especially during climbing, and to boost battery life up to 118 hours of continuous GPS use with 48 days of daily usage.

COROS VERTIX 2S REVIEW

COROS is set to launch the new VERTIX 2S in three distinct versions: Earth, Moon, and Space, paying homage to humanity’s adventurous spirit in the most challenging environments. Each variant boasts a unique dial design.

In a first for the VERTIX series, the VERTIX 2S will come with durable silicone and lightweight nylon straps in coordinated colors within the package. While the 2021 standard strap holds up well, these additions are a welcome upgrade.

COROS VERTIX 2S: GPS Precision Boost

Building on the solid GPS performance of the VERTIX 2, the COROS VERTIX 2S takes it up a notch. It’s the first GPS watch equipped with a GNSS chip connected to the five major satellite systems and dual-frequency technology: GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS, and Beidou, all operating on two frequencies (L1 + L5) simultaneously.

The L5 frequency (1176 MHz) is exclusively reserved for aviation safety services, offering enhanced power, bandwidth, and signal design. Leveraging this advanced signal, the new COROS VERTIX 2 promises improved GPS accuracy.

Even with dual-frequency, accurate GPS tracking for climbers tackling steep walls, chimneys, or off-width cracks has been a challenge for all GPS watch brands. COROS has taken a significant step forward in solving this problem with an optimized GPS algorithm for Outdoor Climb mode.

COROS has long been renowned for its exceptional battery life, and with the latest release, they’ve once again raised the bar. While other GPS brands have caught up in recent releases, COROS stands out with its battery prowess.

The VERTIX 2S boasts an impressive 118 hours of GPS battery life, a significant leap from its predecessors. Even with the multi-band satellite option activated in areas where alternative systems enhance the original US-installed satellite, it still maintains a remarkable 73 hours:

COROS VERTIX 2S: Leading the Way in Heart Rate Accuracy

For athletes, precise data is paramount. Heart rate and GPS metrics play pivotal roles in gauging training progress, recovery, and overall fitness levels. That’s why the COROS VERTIX 2S stands out, featuring the cutting-edge 5-LED and 4-photodetector optical heart rate sensor. This advanced technology ensures accurate heart rate monitoring during workouts and throughout daily activities, providing athletes with invaluable insights into their performance and well-being.

COROS VERTIX 2S: Larger screen for a COROS

In the case of the new VERTIX 2S, we can add up to 8 data on each screen and still each data will be perfectly visible. You can see in the images examples of screens configured by ourselves using the COROS app.

COROS VERTIX 2S: Next Level Processing Power

A new generation processor that will allow us to execute all the new functionalities and that will also respond much faster to our keystrokes and handling of the Digital Knob. It is noticeable mainly when we navigate between the different menus, when we zoom in the maps, search for routes or for example in the updates of the device. It also includes a 32Gb internal memory to store all kinds of content, updates, music, additional maps, routes, work exercises, etc.

COROS VERTIX 2S: Redesigned User Interface

The user interface is similar than the previous version, so any COROS user who wants to switch to VERTIX 2S will have no problems. In the Widgets screen we can modify, add, delete the different Widgets from the App, and then be able to navigate through them both with the Digital Knob and with our finger. A very intuitive and easy-to-use navigation menu.

COROS VERTIX 2S: Audio-enabled Bluetooth and Music

This new version integrates an app for music, so that we can copy our mp3s on the watch, and through Bluethooth we can connect our headphones. Connecting the VERTIX 2S to the computer, a folder for music will open, which the music application will access to read and play our audios. At the moment the application is very basic (it allows to play audios in normal, random and repeat mode) although it does not allow the selection of songs.

COROS VERTIX 2S: Wi-Fi Connectivity

Adds wireless connectivity. We can connect our clock to the home wireless network, which will allow us to update the clock, faster and safer. In addition, the COROS team continues to work to include more functions through WIFI connection.

COROS VERTIX 2S: Insta360™ Camera Control

Within the tools, a function is added to control Insta 360 cameras, such as the Insta360 ™ GO 2, One X2, and the One R from the wrist, so that we do not need to directly manipulate the camera if you carry them anywhere less accessible. We have not been able to test this functionality as we do not have a camera of this type, but it will surely be a very good option if you want to take your camera somewhere during a race or training where it is difficult to access its manipulation. It would be interesting if this functionality were extended to other types of cameras or even the mobile camera.
