STIAN ANGERMUND ACCUSED OF DOPING AFTER OCC GOLD 2023
The public statement made this morning by the two-time Norwegian world champion Stian Angermund Vik about a positive result for chlorthalidone has shaken the world of mountain running today.
Although doping in trail running is not unknown, especially after the positive cases of the male and female champions in Sierre Zinal 2022, it remains a world where anti-doping controls are scarce. The accusation has left many bewildered, considering Angermund Vik’s impeccable reputation as a mountain runner.
In Spain, we have witnessed his feats, seeing him triumph in events like Olla de Nuria or Zegama Aizkorri 2017, while on a global scale, he was crowned two-time world marathon champion at the Mountain and Trail Running World Championships in Chiang-Mai 2022 and Innsbruck-Stubai 2023.
In his statement, Angermund Vik defends his innocence and calls for respect for the ongoing legal process. Now, all that remains is to allow the procedure to run its course and respect the deadlines for his fair defense. Only once the case is closed can we judge on more certain grounds.
What is Chlorthalidone
Chlorthalidone, the substance for which Angermund Vik tested positive, is a diuretic that increases urine flow and sodium excretion to adjust the volume and composition of body fluids. However, the abuse of diuretics by athletes to rapidly lose weight and mask the presence of other prohibited substances has led to its inclusion on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) list of prohibited substances.
STIAN ARGENMUND: DEFENSE STATEMENT
These last few months have been the most difficult and challenging of my sporting career.
On October 20, 2023, I received a life-changing email
from the French anti-doping agency, informing me that the urine sample taken after my OCC victory contained the banned substance chlorthalidone.
I am completely baffled. I have not used any medications or supplements, nor have I taken or misused drugs. Where could this have come from?
I am a clean athlete.
I am currently in the process of vigorously defending my innocence and proving that I am clean.
Due to my suspension and pending investigation, I will not be competing in the summer of 2024, and there is uncertainty as to whether I will ever return to the world stage.
The deep sadness and sadness I feel at losing my career, reputation and passion for the sport cannot be overstated. This experience has already brought countless tears, sleepless nights, and is testing my self-esteem.
I urge everyone to exercise caution and kindness, whether you choose to believe in me or not.
