PILANCONES TUNTE TRAIL 2024: Andreu Simon & Holly Page take the Gran Canaria race. Our TRAIL RUNNING CANARIES section travels now to San Bartolome de Tirajana, and its Pilancones natural park.
The VII Pilancones Tunte Trail took place Saturday, January 20, with a spectacular start from the Plaza de Santiago de Tunte in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana for 900 registered runners and crowned Andreu Simon and Holly Page as winners of the 34k main event.

The event is organized by the Gallotia Club in collaboration with Top Time Events and has a growing reputation and attendance, due to the nice opportunity it offers both to get to know the Pilancones Park step by step, plus testing yourself at Gran Canaria just once month ahead of TRANSGRANCANARIA event.  Plus, the Pilancones Tune Trail kicked off thes 2024 season for the regional Canaries Mountain Federation ensuring top local talents were there to race the international elite also attending. 

PILANONES TUNTE TRAIL: The scenary.

From the Plaza at Tunte as a common start point for all, the  “Media” 25 km. and the 34 km “Desafío” took off together at 8.30AM while the 9 km “Mini” left an hour later with the entire peloton heading towards a privileged route to make the most of the great day that surrounded the charming village of Tunte. 

PILANCONES  NATURAL PARK

All  three courses run through a privileged terrain at the top of Gran Canaria, made up of a succession of small plateaus, crisscrossed by ravines, whose interplay creates one of the most beautiful landscapes in the oldest area of the island.
Pilancones limits to the north with the Roque Nublo Park, and to the east with the Fataga Protected Landscape, and forms one of the oldest areas of the island, with materials that exceed 12 million years.

TUNTE, A PRIVILEGED CORNER OF GRAN CANARIA.

The municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana is the epicenter of the Pilancones Tunte Trail, hosting the start and finish. It is also the largest municipality on the island, so that its mountain landscapes in the upper area alternate with deep ravines, and extend to the beautiful beaches of its coastal coastline, along more than 40km, thus providing a unique blend of sea & mountain tourism 
The old part of the town, known as Tunte, is home to the Church of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, consecrated in 1922, where the Main Altarpiece stands out, centered on the effigy of San Bartolomé, acquired in 1787.

PILANCONES TUNTE TRAIL 2024: RACE REPORT

The seventh edition had raised great expectations, due to the popular success of the event and the high sporting level of the elite. To enhance it even more, we had a splendid day where clouds and clearings alternated for a spring temperature that oscillated around 13-19ºC throughout the day.
The favorites: Among the favorites we had great Spanish and international runners. Among the first, names like Tatiana Mujica, Esteban García, Joel de Paz and Andreu Simón faced the Norwegians Anders Kjaerevik (last year’s winner of the 34 km) and Callum Smith, the Argentines Gabriel Rueda and Florencia MiIlanesi, plus the British Holly Page, winner of the 25 km last year.
The 25 and 34 km runners competed along a similar route passing through Taidía, Pico de las Nieves, Cruz Grande, although the 34 km route was longer. which will pass through Cruz Grande twice, and arrive at the finish line. For its part, the 9 km platoon. He stopped by La Manzanilla as a key point before reaching the finish line located on the Tunte soccer field.

Tje main event was ran along a course of 33.3k/D+2956m launched at 8:30 from the Plaza de Tunte, and wnet on through Taidía, Pico de las Nieves and Cruz Grande, twice before arriving to the finish line.  Participants faced demanding trails and inclement weather, going from 3 to 23ºC . 
In the men’s category, the Asics team runner, spaniard Andreu Simón, winner of the 2023 transgrancanaria classic, leads from start to finish, obtaining the prize of 600 euros. In second place was the Argentine Gabriel Santo Rueda from the Saga training lab, with a prize of 400 euros who managed to beat the Canarian Yoel de Paz from the Nike team by less than a minute, who managed to win 300 euros.
In the female category, british runner Holly Page dominated as expected, since she already knows what it meant to win in this competition. The second female was the Argentine Florencia Milanesi from the Asics team followed by the Canary Islands Elsa Padrón in a beautiful fight with Dunia Cruz, third and fourth respectively.
