In a stunning display of skill and determination, Tom Pidcock, the 24-year-old Ineos Grenadiers rider, marked his return to the cyclocross scene with a resounding victory at the X2O Trofee Herentals. Making his first appearance of the season, Pidcock’s performance was nothing short of remarkable.

Pidcock wasted no time asserting his dominance, swiftly navigating through the field after a strong start at the prestigious event. In a thrilling pursuit, he closed the gap on the leading trio of Pim Ronhaar, Joris Nieuwenhuis, and Ryan Kamp. The Dutch riders initially took control of the race, distancing themselves from the competition.

As other challengers faded away, Pidcock steadily worked his way into contention. He successfully overtook Kamp and Nieuwenhuis before setting his sights on Ronhaar. Taking the lead on lap seven, Pidcock showcased his prowess, establishing a nine-second lead.

However, the race took a dramatic turn when a flat tire threatened to derail Pidcock’s victory. In a nail-biting moment, he managed to reach the pits in time, preserving his lead and securing the win. Reflecting on the race, Pidcock emphasized the strategic importance of pacing, stating, “I learned from the last time I raced here that the last laps are where it really counts. If you go too deep in the start you make mistakes in the end and you can lose 30 seconds easily, so I was just waiting and waiting. It’s a nice start.”
