BOSTON MARATHON 2022: GOLD FOR EVANS CHEBET (2.06:51) & PERES JEPCHIRCHIR (2.21:01)

BOSTON MARATHON 2022: GOLD FOR EVANS CHEBET (2.06:51) & PERES JEPCHIRCHIR (2.21:01). Our MARATHON  section travels today to the historic BOSTON MARATHON, which completed its 126th edition yesterday in a big way.

There were more than 21,000 bibs at the start, for an edition that exceptionally lowered the traditional minimum mark required to open to any previous marathon finalist. For history, there is that return to “Patriot Day” in April and the unforgettable women’s duel Jepchirchir vs Yeshaneh.

BOSTON MARATHON 2022:
EVANS CHEBET (2.06:51)&PERES JEPCHIRCHIR (2.21:01)

For the first time in 1099 days, the Boston Marathon returned to the traditional “Patriot Day” of April, in what was a perfect day for racing. It was an emotional edition, with the perfect return after being suspended in 2020 and run during the last autumn of 2021.
As many as 25,314 athletes took the start in Hopkinton bound for Boston. Among them, participants from 120 countries and of course from all 50 U.S. states. In the U.S., each with the dream of bringing home the coveted medal of the
unicorn.

To emphasize, among the popular ones, that this 2022 edition was atypical because a certain minimum mark was not required. For once, as a gesture of openness after the pandemic, it was enough to accredit the goal of a previous marathon. In this way, many popular marathoners of the peloton were able to live the goal of a test traditionally reserved for good runners.

BOSTON MARATHON 2022: THE COURSE

The traditional 26.2-mile course is a linear marathon with several low climbs that do not make it the most conducive to achieving marks. It starts at Hopkinton before taking runners through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton, Brookline and finally Boston, with the finish line near the Boston Public Library in Copley Square.

The men’s Boston Marathon record turned eleven years old yesterday. He belongs to Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai, who completed the race in 2.03.02 in 2011. The women’s record was set by Ethiopia’s Buzunesh Deba in 2014, when she clocked a time of 2.19.59.

PERES JEPCHIRCHIR, WOMENS WINNER (2.21.01)

The end of the women’s race was the protagonist of the day. He gave us one of the most beautiful recent sporting spectacles, as witnesses of a superb duel on Boylston Street in the centennial history of this race.

And, almost from the start, both wanted to mark their territory and pulled the peloton hard. A first quartet of Jepchirchir, Yeshaneh, London Marathon winner 2021 Joyciline Jepkosgei and Degitu Azimeraw split from the group around km15.

At the time, they were running at a pace to break the race record of 2:19:59. Azimeraw, despite a personal best of 2:17:58 could not hold on for long, but the remaining trio were still together. It was at the passage of mile 23, when Jepkosgei took off and left alone under the spotlight the great stars of this 2022 edition.

It was, without a doubt, a battle for eternity: The kilometers passed and the race was still reduced to the two of them. None of them slackened and they kept passing the miles one after another.

The final stretch to the finish line was apotheosic: Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya and Ababel Yeshaneh of Ethiopia attacked each other mercilessly. To the axe of one responded the other with an attack of his own.

And so, with the public runaway, the fight continued until just 50 meters from the tape finally Peres opened the final gap that allowed her to enter champion with a time of 2h21.01.

Peres Jepcchirchir is consolidated as well as the great dominator of the marathon these years, adding the gold of Boston 2022 to the gold in New York and the Olympic gold achieved in 2021. Wonderful both. This was shared by our friends from Factorrunning from Argentina.

EVANS CHEBET MENS WINNER (2.06:51)

The men’s race was completely different. This year started without big favorites but with a large group of athletes with marks below 2.05. Knowing that the time in Boston is practically impossible in the face of a world record, the grand prix here is the victory in the race. Therefore, a tactical marathon was expected… and so it was.

The group of favorites arrived well aligned to the half marathon of the men’s event, with a time of 1.03:24 that already predicted an end above 2.05 except for major surprises.
Perhaps the great surprise was the brave, almost suicidal attack of the American Albertson, who at times placed himself first and stood out in the lead betting on leaving the group behind. Logically, the prominence of the American was short-lived and was quickly neutralized.

For his part, Chebet had an outstanding account with Boston, after his abandonment here in 2018. This time he came as the winner of the Valencia Marathon in 2020 (CR 2.03.00) and fourth in the last London marathon.

He was looking to settle that blur and found the time to launch the final pull after kilometer 35. He read the race very well, because he immediately left alone in front, only the Tanzanian Geay could follow him a few meters.

Behind her were two Boston champions, Lawrence Cherono (2019) and Benson Kipruto (2021) who posed the most credible threat. Chebet knew he had strength to spare and threw himself towards the finish line pushing with the forces saved by the gentle rhythm until then. So much so that he flew in that section marking a partial of 13:55 until km 40
Chebet never looked back, breaking the tape at 2:06:51. Cherono followed in 2:07:21, with Kipruto third in 2:07:27.
