Black Diamond and EMPEL technology have strengthened their collaboration to improve sustainability in apparel solutions. For the upcoming Winter 21-22 collection, Black Diamond expands its product range with new styles made with this Green Theme Technologies (GTT), taking another step towards a more sustainable footprint.
EMPEL™ TECHNOLOGY
EMPEL™ technology is a revolutionary treatment that eliminates the use of water pollution in the finishing of fabrics. The secret lies in the uniform polymers that individually wrap each fiber with a protective, molecularly bonded and water-repellent shield. The EMPEL Dry Finish process contains no water or solvents.
More sustainable production and more advanced performance:
- Fabrics treated with EMPEL™ do not get wet in case of strong or prolonged storms. They have been subjected to heavy rain tests, demonstrating up to 10 times higher water resistance compared to other solutions. EMPEL technology adheres uniformly to each fiber at the molecular level to improve the natural breathability of the fabric, which improves the overall breathability of the system.
- The unique EMPEL™ polymer chains contain flexible properties that prevent treated fabrics from becoming rigid or noisy. Wearing a garment treated with EMPEL™ is therefore a surprisingly smooth and silent experience.
- EMPEL™ is safe, PFC-free and, according to Oeko-Tex’s independent certifications, meets or exceeds global safety standards.

BLACK DIAMOND DAWN PATROL HYBRID SHELL
This ski touring layer is designed to protect from the storm while remaining breathable on climbs, has a breathable softshell fabric in key places for thermal regulation, while the chest, shoulders and hood remain impenetrable thanks to black Diamond’s BD.dry™ solution.
The entire fabric is treated with GTT’s Empel PFC-Free finish, an environmentally friendly DWR that is superior in durability and performance. Its elasticity will allow you to move in every way and feel extremely comfortable. Its innovative double center zipper features a built-in mesh panel for ventilation on the climb, and the perforated panel on your neck allows you to breathe freely while protecting your face from fresh air.
The Dawn Patrol Hybrid comes with two chest pockets compatible with the harness for storing furs, an internal pocket and a hood compatible with the ski helmet. Velcro cuffs are combined with a lightweight gaiter on the wrists for maximum protection.
