NATIONS CUP WMRA: INAUGURAL EDTION
RACE REPORT LIVE FROM CHIAVENNA .
There was a great desire to return to competitions, a desire to challenge each other and to find themselves in the jersey of their own national team.
And today in Chiavenna that desire has turned into a spectacular race, the Val Bregaglia Trail, which for the 2021 edition hosted the Mountain Running Nations Cup, the first international event after two years of cancellations.
The rain expected today on the border between Switzerland and Italy does not fall, the competition ground for the Nations Cup of mountain running which saw 14 nations with about 128 athletes on the starting line, plus the more than 200 participants in the open race.
WOMENS GOLD TO FRANCESCA GHELFI IN NATIONS CUP WMRA
Waving the flag on the top step of the women’s podium with the victory of Francesca Ghelfi who closes the race in 1h34’36 ”, in front of the very strong Scottish Scout Adkin and the German Hanna Grober who just in the final rush overcomes the blue Alice Gaggi, fourth at the end.

MENS GOLD TO ABRAHAM FILIMON IN NATIONS CUP WMRA

The German Filimon Abraham and the Kenyan Lengen Lolkurraru, favored by forecasts, leave very strong and lead the race to the finish in Chiavenna, exchanging only positions at the passages of Soglio and dell’Acquafraggia.
The Kenyan tries to stretch but Abraham does not give up and at the Acquafraggia waterfalls, just under 5 kilometers from the end, he passes with just 5 seconds of detachment, reset before the last descent which for the German becomes only a final walkway towards the Chiavenna finish line, closing with a time of 1h18’29 ”.
Behind the final sprint between Beçan and Pattis for the third position, parade by the Slovenian in the last 5 meters. Excellent performances by the rest of the blue team with Marco Filosi 7th and Luca Merli 15th, results that give Italy the victory of the team race, ahead of England and Romania.

ITALY AND ENGLAND ALTERNATE GOLD & SILVER.
In the team race double blue podium with the men’s victory and the second place for women. And same for England, the other way around, Both countries clearly dominated team category. Men’s bronze to Romania; Women’s bronze to Czech Republic.
Going back to seeing the national jerseys together in a mountain running competition has been an exciting spectacle for everyone, palpable emotions at the start of the competition from the Swiss village of Promontogno.

WMRA HAPPY TO HAVE GLOBAL COMPETITION BACK
“We are happy to be able to organize, together with the staff of the Val Bregaglia Trail, an event in just six weeks.
An event in which the athletes were able to compete for their country and to which our WMRA and World Athletics members were able to participate after two long years without a World Championship for our senior athletes – said WMRA President Jonathan Wyatt.
The races were tough and the competition exciting. It is a pleasure to hear the national teams and individual winners once again for a senior mountain running race.
WMRA would like to thank the services of the city of Chiavenna and their superb organizational team, as well as the support we have received from the Italian Athletics Federation (FIDAL) ”.
Now for everyone the very important appointment with the mountain running champions is in 2022 in Thailand for the world championship scheduled and finally confirmed from 10 to 13 February.
