CASIO G-SHOCK: HISTORY 1983-2021.
In 1978, Kikuo Ibe was CASIO’S leading watch designer, and they just created the first digital watch. In 1981, he created a new team with only three members with the goal of making an indestructible watch. To do this Kikuo proposed a watch that surpassed the concept “Triple 10”:
- A battery with a lifespan of 10 years
- Withstand a fall of 10 meters high
- Pass the 10 bar water resistance test.
And also… to be commercially successful, this sports watch had to be at the same time multifunctional and stand out for its design.
Very different materials were tested, and the strength of the first prototypes was subjected to the most demanding requirements. But Ibe was not satisfied, not even the strongest metals fully protected the internal digital mechanism against shocks and other external agents., The target seemed increasingly distant…
Legend has it that one day, while watching some children in a park, Ibe, realized something: “The inside of a rubber ball that bounces is not affected at all by the shock effect.” Thus he developed a clock of hollow construction, with which the interior module was practically suspended.
The testing phase lasted almost two years. But, after more than 200 prototypes in which the development of the housing and the different parts was constantly optimized.
The result was the CASIO G SHOCK DW-5000C-1A watch. It was the first G-SHOCK that paved the way for the rest. G-SHOCK watches are since then the best known CASIO product line, icon of the brand.
