WMRA: Sylvain Cachard and Sara McCormack conquered Trofeo Nasego

Trofeo Nasego became, with today’s edition, an international event of mountain running and, in absence of WorldChamps, he aim for a new milestone in running on mountains.

The Italian titles were for Puppi and Ghelfi, but Nasego confirms us the presence of some the top international runners who even in the year of the pandemic did not want to miss their presence on the Heights of Savallese. Spectacular races with the emotions of the under 20 trophy that saw great protagonists from Italy and Check Republic.

WMRA: TROFEO NASEGO 2020

Sylvain Cachard (1:34:11) and Sara McCormack (1:52:32) winners

With a great commitment and attention from the organizers of Athletics Valli Bergamasche Leffe and ABCF Comero to arrange a proper protocol: masks and space, the watchwords of this edition. But in the middle there were the races and the three did not betray: pure spectacle with the first part as usual launched to the whole in the side valleys of Casto with the Park Fucine, the Ferrate, the Floors of Alone. Then the climb to Nasego, the symbol and icon of this race now in its 19th edition.

The battle at the men was between Sylvain Cachard and Francesco Puppi, who already at The FlettaTrail of Malonno had given birth to an exciting duel. In the very first part, Chevrier and Maestris were shown in a small group that includes Cachard, Puppi, Douglas and Rancon. The five were together until mid-race. The race runs at km 14 when the hardest climb was at its beginning and Cachard and Puppi managed to make a difference and put almost a minute on the chasers.

During the downhill, Cachard literally flought and pulverized Douglas’ record with a new time of 1h34’11”.

Sylvain Cachard focused his training on this competition and he confirmed all by winning with new course record. “Knowing the course helped me a lot today and on long uphill I was sure about myself pushing hard and seeing Puppi almost tired. In last downhill, I ran as fast as never in my life. So happy to have won here in Casto where they love so much mountainrunning.

Puppi caught second place in 1h35.16 going also him under former record. He won also italian title on long distances. Other italian star Xavier Chevrier, back to race after injury, catched a great third place in 1h37.28. Andrew Douglas (Gbr) finished fourth in 1h37.36 and Julien Rancon (Fra) fifth in 1h38.01.

Irish Sarah McCormack came in Casto as favourite too and demonstrated once more her talent around Nasego hills going to win Trofeo Nasego in a great solo. She made her big move in middle of race and, neither former worldchamp Lucy Murigi could followed her.

Words from Sarah McCormack after the victory: “At first I was third, I was sure I was sticking to them because in the horrible part I knew I wasn’t the strongest. Then when the track became more technical and the long climb arrived I decided to push to the maximum, a victory of great importance for me that will be hard to forget. I’m so happy.
